FINA withdraws doping case against Kira Toussaint

Statement from Kira Toussaint: ‘On Monday, 11 March 2019, I was told by FINA that they are withdrawing their official doping case against me immediately. Earlier, FINA informed me that at a doping control on 2 November 2018 during the World Cup in Beijing, tulobuterol had been found in my sample. This turned out to be completely inaccurate. FINA had initiated proceedings against me on the basis of this alleged positive test. Tomorrow, the hearing in Lausanne was due to take place. FINA has withdrawn the case at the last moment.56776-01-3

‘I have always denied using tulobuterol. Following the alleged positive doping test, we therefore thoroughly researched the possible causes of the positive urine test for tulobuterol. It turned out that there was a false positive caused by another – fully approved – medication I use. I also mentioned the use of this medication on the doping control form. Apparently, it was hitherto not known that this agent may cause a false positive test for tulobuterol.

‘As a result of this (new) insight, WADA asked the doping laboratory in Beijing – which initially tested the samples – to retest the samples using different testing methods. This showed that the earlier results of tulobuterol in these samples were indeed incorrect. Tulobuterol was never found in my samples. FINA has, on this basis, decided to withdraw the proceedings.

‘On the one hand, I am of course delighted that my innocence is proven, and now I can swim again. On the other hand, I am disappointed at how the process went. It was fully known to FINA and WADA which medication I use, and I’ve always said that I have never doped. I, myself, engaged specialists to investigate and prove my innocence. If the results of that investigation had not revealed that the test methods that were used so far were not reliable and may lead to a false positive test tulobuterol, I would probably have been sentenced unjustly to a suspension of two years.

‘The past year was terrible for me. One of the worst and unexpected things was missing the World Cup short course in China. I was in peak condition, but I had to return home for something that happened that was beyond my control. I am glad that I can now leave this period behind and focus fully on my sport.
