It depends what you are importing. But for the majority of products, when importing to the US, using a customs broker is no required though suggested with large quantities. Just remember that some items have specific labeling requirements, and specific licenses need to be shown (like if it is food, it has to be FDA approved.... or when importing toys a certificate from the manufacture is required showing that it passes test for toxicity).
