When people talk about graphic design projects, you will typically hear the conversation centered on the personal interaction between the creative director, art director and the production design team. Traditionally, all of these interactions take place in an office, and all parties involved only need to get closer to control issues of direction, style, and other things. In theory, there is almost no difference. Depending on the person, in practice there can be a very clear difference. Project managers or supervisors who feel the need to talk to their employees face-to-face on a daily basis are probably not very familiar with the concept of teleworking. Teleworking requires a level of trust that comes only from previously completed projects that are on time and on budget, and with a level of satisfaction that is beyond doubt. It is a new idea that goes against the conventional. In fact, most people already work remotely. They just do not know. Ask yourself. What part of your current work environment involves direct communication with your colleagues? Has not much of what you are already doing in remote communications been done?
There are ways to transition to workflows that are less dependent on on-site staff. Teams can be formed on site and standards for communication can be set. As long as players are not spread across continents, update meetings can be scheduled to maintain and renew a sense of cohesion among the team. Weekly teleconferences bring unity to teams working together over long distances.
All in all, no trust builds as successful completed projects. Obstacles that are overcome and lead to quality work are the measure of success in all situations and lead to a sense of satisfaction and a belief that the system works. Adjustments can be made to refine the process, leading to a greater sense of security, especially among new teams in teleworking. As the comfort of all shareholders increases, people can enjoy a new sense of freedom in where they live and how the work is done. Ultimately, the key is focused communication and rules on how the work is done.
