A clever and witty point and click musical adventure, in a modern monster world, where hipster vampires, birocratic ghosts, PC-frat werewolves and misunderstood soulful undead reign...and you get to be one of them!. Although this game is quirky to play and funny on average, it has some major bugs that come to rise that not only pull you out of the game but also, quite literally, puts you outside of the game world. (I used a MacBook Air to play it if that makes a difference in this case.)
I would not recommend this game.. Love this game and am having a really fun time with it. Lots of catchy tunes and an endearing story line that will keep you hooked from the start. Not to mention it has a really cool art style that makes the whole game a treat on the eyes. Definitely worth picking up if adventure games are your thing, or even as a first try with the genre.. a very interesting game you control a ghost, a vampire, a zombie, and a werewolf, and at the end you fight a bagpipe playing rock mummy.. It's fairly short (about 4 - 5 hours), it's funny, it's got good music, and a lovely graphical style. To me this is a must play.
It has a couple of minor bugs, but nothing that ruins the experience. (There's an item you can pick up twice, despite only being able to use it once. But the inventory seems to be infinite, so it doesn't really do anything other than force you to scroll past one extra item.). Wailing Heights...
Some quick personal thoughts:
I managed to complete it on my first run, without actually cheating much (i did check for a quick guide one time tho) due to getting myself stuck because i was trying to do just a few too many things at once really.
It's not for everyone because of the setting and pace this game has, however to me personally it was something new and that's why i bought, played and enjoyed it until completion.
The game has a nice artsy cartoony look to it and the story is nicely written with lot's of animations, spoken texts, comical humour and plenty of nice tunes to boot.
Never have i personally encountered any game breaking bugs, crashes or corrupted save files or anything. At some rare occasions i did however notice some glitches here and there but nothing that broke down the game.
Overall i am happy to have bought and played the game for over 10 hours (i got more than my moneys worth for it) so i will gladly reccomend this to everyone who has a real open mind for such slow paced narrative driven point on click games.
My personal score 7/10. Wailing Heights is an unsual and attractive looking game with very original content. There were some good music references and fun with the names of characters. I liked the overall look of the game, and the concept was interesting. Where I felt the gameplay was let down a little was the repetativeness of certain elements.
There appeared to be two Acts to the game and I liked the idea of splitting these, as Act 2 felt like a new part to the game. But I felt there should have been a final Act 3, maybe with a little more to do with finding 'the body.' Which seemed to become a little redundant towards the end of the game.
The music was very original, and fair play to the writers and voice actors used. But the same music playing over and over did get quite tedious after a while. Especially when I found myself waking up in the morning and the 'Betty the Banshee' one line on repeat in my head. I maybe should have looked to see whether there was an option to turn off the music within the game. Also I found the length in which it took to switch characters during the game started to annoy me a little. Especially when you had to listen to the whole of the song each time. Lola's loves and hates are now etched into my brain.
Unfortunately this wasn't a game I really loved. It had its moments and some fun elements, but I found the gameplay repatative, especially towards the end and the final part of it quite a let down. I would still recommend this for the price and it's original content. Just I honestly have to say for me I would have liked a little more variety and some more streamlined elements.. A good but glitchy P&C.
Its specifics:
- Fully voice-acted, high quality
- Gamepad-friendly
- Unusual inventory; no descriptions, no combinations... everything is used through dialogue
- Cut-scenes in the form of comics pages
- Music-themed
- Interchangeable bodies with different abilities, dialogues and voices
Today is list-day, so here are the flaws:
- The art is cool, but some animations are weak, notably the depth movements.
- Imprecise hit-boxes require precise movement adjustments (minor annoyance.)
- Protagonist sometimes blocked by an object or character, with fidgeting required to unblock.
- The sound is good but sometimes marred by post-production issues, notably uneven volumes.
- One obscure dialogue option changes its result after a specific event occurrs, in an unfair progression roadblock.
- A few minor glitches, not worth detailing, add to the impression of lack of polish.
Still enjoyable and worth playing thanks to the art, humour and game mechanics. Progress is intuitive (with a couple of exceptions.) The voicing and music bring all the life and atmosphere of this title. Expect a lot of back and forth in a well designed small world.
