Yes the game is a grind, as many RPG's are. However the complexity of the grinding and using the various skills and improving them afterward is an ongoing reward for the work. Where I think this game differs from most RPG's even at this early stage is in the depth of the skill/craft progression, an attribute the developer shows every sign of continuing. It takes many hours of working on wood, stone, bone, hide, brushworking skills to rightfully feel I've earnt the crafts that are available already and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where he takes the game further. Hunting and fishing skills improve with use, "Yahoo, I can one shot a wolf with a sling now", and it feels satisfying to know that I can now make a fire in one try nearly every time, its not so easy at first. Add to that a very large world to explore.
In short this is very good, relaxed and varied "grind" with appropriate rewards thats already good for an enjoyable few days play. The developer listens, is very dedicated and I am very sure this game will only get better.. What a waste of time and gaming effort. Starting tools do not last through the first craft so you are stuck with no tools and no item and no way to make a new tool. try to build a fire with your starting items and your item (most likely the stick) will wear out before you get a fire so you have to make a new one which uses up your sharpened stone knife, Funny how a small wooden rod just destroys a piece of stone. s there you are you finally get a fire built but you had to use up your sharpened stone and alas there is no way on this planet to get another, or even find a piece of broken rock with a sharp edge. There is an elusive, mysterious and magical item in the game called a billet that is needed to make any sharpened stone or bone tool, problem is you cannot find one. it is probably crafted in a forge of some type so forget about crafting one folks. Would figure the designer would have at least made it possible to keep playing but after over an hour of looking for one I gave up. Tried several different combinations of charachter equipment and abilities and all ended up at the same result, no tools to do anything with and character left with no tools to scavange for food and water, what fun!!!!. Kenshi is a great example of how a game, even if stuck in development for many years, can be an amazing game that delivers on its premise AND delivers on the "fun" factor of a game.
Vantage: Primitive Survival, on the other hand... is not. It simply was not fun for me to play it despite enjoying the premise that it is built on, it felt tedious and the interaction controls with items as well as the grind required made me think of Wurm Unlimited\/Online, which sadly in this case is not a compliment. The way the gameplay has been designed and engineered just does not create fun for me, I would have far more fun booting up Stranded 2 than playing this game.
So no... I do not recommend it, and I don't care that it's Early Access either. You can't bug fix a bad game flow design, but I genuinely wish you the best of luck and give my best hopes that you make it through Early Access and release an amazing product, Crystal Dragon.
EDIT: I would like to emphasize quickly that, my comparison of this game to Kenshi is not meant to be 1:1... I am only contrasting the fact that both have been in development for a long time, and I am not measuring mechanics and genre between the two because that would be silly, both have different goals. It is only to emphasize the point of, "One delivers on a fun game flow and gameplay design, and one does not".. What a waste of time and gaming effort. Truley horrible experience. I see why Steam stopped the Greenlit program. This game was no were near ready for release. Uninstall, refund.. Don't judge the book by it's cover. It's Xsyon Prelude meets UnReal World in 3D. Yes, the graphics are not from this decade, but who cares, this is deeper than Mariana Trench. I don't even care about PERMADEATH. All I want to have is enough players to have community to play with.. debated on picking this up for about a month.. just ran outta games that had a good crafting aspect to them. so i thought i would give this one a shot. Glad i did. let me warn you if you don't like to grind for something meaning putting work in to get a long term goal then this game is not for you.. First 4 hours of my game play was making stone sharping tools over and over as i would brake them when trying to cut off wood on a tree, after 4 hours i got to where i could accutally compleat one small branch without brakeing the sharpin tool that i just made out of banging rocks together. also all wile trying to keep water and food in my player. controls are a bit tricky, if you have played LiF then it's the same tab click tab move.. but if you have not then it will take you around about 30min to learn how to control the UI. this isn't a walk in the park game.. makes LIF on hard look like cake when it comes to crafting and grinding.. if you want a challange come see us.. there is only one server up and running. i am there pretty much everyday sometime in the day... Enjoy!. Vantage FAQ's Created!:
I have just written three comprehensive FAQs for the game for players to help get themselves familiar with the game mechanics, and answer and questions they may have while playing, logging in, or setting up a server. You can check them out on the Steam discussion forums here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/342910/discussions/. Half Way There!!!:
I am now half way through part 2 of my final game play and optimization overhaul. The amount of work being done is tremendous! But when I am finished this game will be hugely optimized, bug fixed, and game play tested. I have touched and altered nearly every item, skill, craft, and game play mechanic inside and out, and I am still only half way done with my optimization list.
However, once all of this is done, I will finally release the new version to Steam for the play testers to go at it and get some final input before releasing the game into Early Access.
But for now, gotta keep my head down, and try to stay sane through this process. I will post more later on what I have actually improved and added, but I'll save those juicy bits for later ;)
