"To be, or not to be, that is the question:" which begins your Shakespearean adventure to attempt to kill your evil Uncle Claudius while fighting pirates, time travelling, becoming a ninja, playing death chess, having a singalong with a gravedigger, oh and turning yourself into a trout. (And you can have some stew in the mean time, and lots of making out, if you want)

I'm a huge fan of "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories, I've studied and read Shakespeare's Hamlet and I'm a big fan of Ryan North's witty and snarky sense of humor. Put all that together and you have "To Be or Not To Be". In this game, you play as either Hamlet, Ophelia (BEST CHARACTER BY THE WAY), or Hamlet Sr (Yes, a ghost). The premise is simple, read along and make choices and create your own version of Hamlet. With so many choices, and some cringingly awesome puns, you control the fate of your character and his/her kin. The gameplay is fun, although, I wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't enjoy reading or appreciate Ryan North's brand of humor (snarky, sarcastic, and nerdy). Also, it can get a bit pedantic, so I also wouldn't recommend trying another story immediately after beating it the first time. While the gameplay doesn't have much artwork, like in a visual novel, certain plot elements allows you to unlock pieces of artwork create by a variety of webcomic artists. Music is charming but a bit repetitive and there is great narration (which you can turn on or off).

It's a great game, but not necessarily for everyone; if you like to make your adventures with a nice dosage of nerdy humor, definitely pick up this game in a sale.. Pretty funny but didn't keep my attention for long.. Fantastically funny. Yes, it's overwhelmingly the same as the book. But the game format is much less of a finger masher. It's extremely convenient this way! If, by some chance, you have not yet read the book, you will likely LOVE this. Even f you have read the book, this is still worth revisiting!. It's a meh, in terms of an overall recomendation. I wouldn't recomend it to my friends as, others have pointed out, there isn't much in the way of story for the players to read. Way too much is summerized and replay gets pretty boring. Even when I seemed to play a "main" story line I was still finished in about 10mins.

The writing is at an elementry/early highschool level and the hummour is more silly than "uproarious" and "hilarious", but not unfunny as some other people have suggested. As an English Lit student I guess I expected more...I don't know... academic humour or at least a more critical understanding of the material.

I guess I expected more because I heard about this game from Kate Beaton and I always liked Ryan North's Dinasour Comics. However, over all the writing falls flat and feels rushed. Some of it attempts to recreate Kate Beaton's anachronistic dialouge style, but it comes accross as someone who doesn't understand WHY it works.

I think it has potential and I would love to see this game redone, maybe with a bit of a "Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)" vibe and just mix ALL the Shakespeare storylines together.. Such a good experience. If you loved the traditional CYOA books, you'll love this. If you love Hamlet, you'll love this. Whatever happens. You'll love this. It's so creative, so humorous, and worth the money.. I only read the credits. Yes, the credits. They were glorious.

11/10 would stall again

update: actually played the game now. Invented central heating, logicked a ghost, and befouled stockings. Still glorious af.
