Around 1820 the son of a California nobleman comes home from Spain to find his native land under a villainous dictatorship. On the one hand he plays the useless fop, while on the other he is the masked avenger Zorro.
Don Diego Vega returns to California to learn that his father is no longer the alcalde of Los Angeles having been forced out and replaced by the corrupt Don Luis Quintero and supported by his Captain of the Guard, Esteban Pasquale. Vega disdains interest in politics and the treatment of the local population. The people soon have their savior in the form of Zorro, the masked bandit who has sworn to protect them. He steals from the tax man and ensures that the money is returned to the poor peasant farmers. In the hopes of cementing his power - and unaware of his secret identity - Quintero arranges for his beautiful daughter Lolita to marry Don Diego but she resists the seemingly foppish young man. Her views change when she learns he is really Zorro. As tensions rise, Zorro will have to defeat Esteban Pasquale if justice and order is to be restored.
A former Sword fighter is ordered home from Spain. To find it desolated by the new Alcalde. His father the former Alcalde was forced into resignation, but refuses to take action no matter how much he hates the situation. He believes "Two wrongs don't make a Right!" Diego is forced to hide his IdentityZorro and stand up for the people and terrorize the Alcalde and his men with his mark of the "Z" with the greatest swordsmanship of any Zorro.
Great action and at the same time one of the most hilarious roles ever to come out of Hollywood. Tyrone Power is great in the title role, not only when in full swashbuckling actionZorro, but alsothe effeminate dandy Don Diego Vega, fanning his handkerchief, sneezing, and performing ridiculous magic tricks upon stupid prison wardens, when not courting the beautiful Alcalde's daughter Inez Quintero. You gotta love Zorro, the good old-fashioned hero of LA county, always prepared to fight for justice, fight poverty and save damsels in distress, occasionally engraving the mark "Z", preferably on men's chest or cloth.

There's enough innuendo and snappy dialog in here to keep adult audiences entertainedwellenough action for younger audiences to cherish this film (and even enough romance with dashing Power to keep the ladies satisfied). Basil Rathbone,Captain Esteban Pasquale, makes a superb villain, always prepared to draw his sword, either for serious business or sadistic amusement. "Most men have objects they play with. Churchmen have their beads; I toy with a sword."

Wit Tyrone Power's undisputed comedic talent, he adds so much wit into his character (and to the already hilarious lines), the film is a real hoot. It's a shame Power embarked on more serious roles later in his career. With most of the lines ranging from the outright hilarious to marvelously corny, like Don Diego Vega's courting of the young lady Inez: "You're more lovely, more radiant than a morning in June," it's hard to take it all very serious, but when the fencing starts, playtime is over. Basil Rathbone, one of Hollywood's most skilled swordsmen, knows how to handle a sword like no-one else and Tyrone Power was quick to learn. The climactic swashbuckling scene between the two arch enemies in the small confined room of the Alcalde (brilliantly choreographed) is - till this very day - the best sword fight ever put on film, even surpassing the final fight between Rathbone and Errol Flynn, two years before in THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938).

Camera Obscura --- 9/10

Fictional characters that are sometimes likened to McCulley's Zorro include (1) Baroness Emmuska Orczy's fictional Sir Percival Blakeney, hero of Scarlet Pimpernel (1905), (2) the medieval anthropomorphic character, Reynard the Fox, (3) Robin Hood, the heroic outlaw in English folklore, and (4) Spring-heeled Jack, a British urban legend character popularized in 1890s penny dreadfuls. On the other hand, Zorro has provided the inspiration for numerous fictional characters popular today, suchthe Lone Ranger, Batman, and even Puss in Boots, a Zorro parody in the Shrek film series, first appearing in Shrek 2 (2004) (2004). No actual date or year is mentioned in the movie. However, McCulley set his stories about Zorro's exploits in early 19th century, Spain-governed California, prior to it becoming a U.S. state in 1850. Yes and no. Yes, Power did a lot of his own fencing in the saber duel between Diego and Pasquale, which was choreographed by Hollywood fencing master, Fred Cavens. However, Cavens' son Albert, made up to look like Power, doubles for him in some parts of the duel, mostly with his back to the camera. You can see Albert's face after he breaks the glass in the bookcase, when he turns and exits screen left. On the other hand, Basil Rathbone did all of his own fencing. In his autobiography, In And Out Of Character (1962), Rathbone writes that he studied stage fencingpart of his training at the Old Vic. He even ventured into competitive fencing for a short time but didn't take to it. Diego is captured by Quintero's sentries and placed behind bars with Padre Felipe (Eugene Pallette). Quintero forces all the local peons and cabelleros, including Don Alejandro, to assemble in order to watch the execution of the outlaw Zorro. Diego tricks his cellkeeper by offering to change a centavo into a gold piece, swipes his gun, and forces him to release him and the padre. Cabelleros and peons alike align themselves with Diego, and they easily overpower Quintero's soldiers. In front of everyone, Quintero is forced to resign under the pretense of moving to Spain, and Don Alejandro is named his successor. In the final scene, Quintero's wife Inez (Gale Sondergaard) asks Diego and Lolita when they will come to Madrid, but Diego says that they're going to stay and follow the customs of California...'marry and raise fat children and watch our vineyards grow.' He then tosses his sword into the ceiling to commemorate the day. There have been 16 Zorro films in the US to date, two TV series, and about 40 Mexican, Spanish, French, Italian and Belgian Zorro films. Some of the more notable Zorros have been played by Douglas Fairbanks in The Mark of Zorro (1920) (1920) and Don Q Son of Zorro (1925) (1925), Robert Livingston in The Bold Caballero (1936) (1936), Reed Hadley in Zorro's Fighting Legion (1939) (1939), Guy Williams in Walt Disney's Zorro (1957) TV series (1957-1959), Frank Langella in the made-for-TV The Mark of Zorro (1974) (1974), George Hamilton in Zorro parody Zorro: The Gay Blade (1981) (1981), Duncan Regehr in another TV series Zorro (1990) (1990-1993), Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro (1998) (1998), and Banderas again in the sequel The Legend of Zorro (2005) (2005). Z, featuring Gael García Bernal in the title role, was set for release in 2014.
