Solo is sent to investigate the disappearance of an elderly scientist and emergence of man who looks like a youthful version of the scientist. He begins by talking to the man's daughter but she is killed before she could tell him anything. He then tries to talk to her employer, a woman who wants to empowered. He learns that a another scientist who worked with the one he is looking for works for her, so he looks for him. Eventually he learns that THRUSH is also looking for him.
A scientist has developed a machine that reverses the aging process. UNCLE races Thrush for the device. An aging British politician and his manipulative wife will be key players in the outcome.
The second two-parter from 'M.F.U.' Season 2 holds the honour of being the only adventure adapted from an existing novel. Henry Slesar's 'The Bridge Of Lions' told the story of an American secret agent searching for a missing biochemist who has developed a rejuvenation process. It was restructured as an U.N.C.L.E. adventure by Howard Rodman, later to write the Clint Eastwood picture 'Coogan's Bluff' ( 1968 ).

Illya is keeping tabs on a cat with a homing device in its collar. A man ( Richard Peel ) tries to steal it ( the animals are being used in illegal scientific experiments ), and is about to tell the Russian the address in London where he has been taking his moggies when he is shot dead by Olga ( Monica Keating ), who also wounds Illya.

At U.N.C.L.E. H.Q., Mr.Waverly shows Solo a photograph of the missing biochemist Dr.Benjamin Lancer ( James Doohan ), and then one of Philip Bainbridge who by a strange coincidence resembles a younger version of the same man.

In Paris, Solo meets Lorelei ( Delores Faith ), Lancer's daughter, who works as fashion model for the House of De Sala. Her employer, Madame de Sala ( Vera Miles ) is a megalomaniac feminist out to wrest control of the world from men. She instructs the girl not to speak to the spy. When she breaks her word, de Sala has her killed.

At the Byrum Club in London, Bainbridge is playing chess with retired politician Sir Norman Swickert ( Maurice Evans ). Both belong to 'The Bridge Of Lions', an international chess club for intellectuals. Bainbridge admits to being Lancer, and offers to have Sir Norman rejuvenated using the same process...

Rodman's witty script is good enough to have fitted neatly into 'The Avengers'. Even if the Britain depicted here has only ever existed on U.S. network television, it is still good fun. Not a great deal of action though ( for the cinema release 'One Of Our Spies Is Missing!' new scenes were shot, including Solo finding Lorelei dead in a bath-tub, and Solo chasing Olga through London after Bainbridge/Lancer's murder ). Not in the movie version is a short scene at THRUSH Central in Hong Kong, where Mr.Chang ( James Hong ) briefs Charles Jordin ( Bernard Fox ). Leigh Chapman's 'Wanda' was replaced by none other than 'Batgirl' herself - Yvonne Craig.

Maurice Evans was 'Dr.Zaius' in the original 'Planet Of The Apes' movie ( 1968 ). James Doohan, who previously appeared in Season 1's 'The Shark Affair', will forever be remembered as 'Scotty' from the classic 'Star Trek' series/movies. Bernard Fox has made a good living over the years as stuffy Englishmen in countless U.S. films and shows. Ann Elder plays 'Nurse Joanna Sweet' but unfortunately her Scottish accent is on a par with Dick Van Dyke's attempts at Cockney in 'Mary Poppins' ( 1963 ).

Nice moment as Solo drives to Sir Norman's estate in Surrey, only to find bodyguard/chauffeur Fleeton ( Cal Bolder ) blocking his path. To ensure he gets the point that he is not welcome, the titan lifts the front of the car and turns it so that it faces the other way. Solo smiles, doffs his hat, starts the engine - and reverses in through the open gates!

The cliffhanger climax features Solo and Kuryakin about to be pulverised in a wine press. To be continued... THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Bridge of Lions Affair – 1966 Pt - 1

This is the 49th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum, plays Illya Kuryakin, Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

This one is episode one of a two part story. The review will cover parts one and two.

UNCLE is out looking for a youth rejuvenation machine. They have photos of a scientist who looks 30 years younger than he is. Robert Vaughn is sent off to Paris to look into the matter. David McCallum is sent to London looking for why cats of all things are disappearing off the streets of London. (The cats play an important part later)

Both agents find that there searches lead to the same location. A lab ran by another scientist, Harry Davis. Davis works for Paris beauty salon owner Vera Miles. Miles is in love with a retired UK political type, Maurice Evans. The man is old and confined to a wheel car. Miles wants to give him the treatment.

Needless to say THRUSH finds out about the machine and sends a top man, Bernard Fox to grab the device. UNCLE and THRUSH types do the old cat and mouse thing as each tries to get the upper hand. Even UNCLE boss, Leo G Carroll gets into action on this assignment.

Plenty of red herrings abound with bodies piling up as both hit men and hit women ply their trade. All the plotting and such goes for nothing as the machine is destroyed and the only man who can operate it, Davis, is killed. Miss Miles also takes a bullet for true love. (The cats were being used by the machine to test the results.)

I wanted to like the two parts, but it really does not gel well. There were a bit too many story arcs that go nowhere. The screenplays for both episodes are based on the novel of the same name by Henry Slesar. James (Scotty) Doohan has a small bit in the first episode.
