Release Date: 3 Nov, 2014

I didn’t enjoyed the writing. The art style wasn’t great either, and the characters and a few situations were bad/didn’t made much sense. Only get this DLC on a good sale and if you want to read a bit more of Asumi material.
Overall, I don’t recommend this graphic novel.. The actual contents start at page 48, so there goes your 240+ full colour graphic novel. Another 40 or so pages are spent introducing characters(who have been already introduced in words) The story has no coherence to pay attention to and you are just reading girl fighters killing bad guys in lurid costume; it's mostly eye-candy, but a hardly interesting eye-candy at that. I swear you could dream a dream with better plots. Everything is pretty much non-sense so the illustrations are all the merit there is and they are sparse and you can get better illustrations of fighting girls on web for free.
The art's quality fluctuates as there seem to be multiple artists but it gets better after the intro chapters. Male characters are not drawn much better than stickman, and background is missing in most panels.
VN is better than the GN. It's not that the VN is anything spectacular but the GN is just so bad... I probably would have enjoyed it were I 8 years-old when I first read it.
edit: I posted criticism of this GN on the forum and the dev deleted my thread, so I might as well add a bit more details to my initial review.
1. First 48 pages are filled with kickstater backer names, character introductions in a paragraph or two, and the author's comments. Many of these characters have 1 or 2 lines throughout the entire GN and take up more space through introduction pages than they do in the actual story. These pages are more helpful in understanding the story than the rest of GN and that's not a good thing.
2. Plots are utterly devoid of coherence. It's literally hard to understand, not because it is sophisticated, but because storytelling, dialogue, panel divisions, character development are all abhorrently bad. It does have a plot but more than 50% of plots are conveyed via the character introductions because the 'graphic' part of this graphic novel doesn't make much sense.
3. all characters are.... 0 dimensional. Yes, not even 1 dimensional, flat, but 0 dimensional because they lack consistency. Don't expect a character development for there is none to be found and don't expect characters to act sanely because... they lack characters.
4. I don't know if it's possible to summarize the story, but I will try for those curious. Excuse me if I missed something because the story was so unmemorable that many details have already slipped my mind since yesterday I read the GN. I'm not joking.
The story is set in alternate world's Japan where they never opened their border and retained much of their tradition to 21st century. Emperor was murdered by Shogun for no reason and Shogun became a supreme ruler of Japan. That's fine, but now we have Lord Regent and the Council as ruling bodies of Japan without explanations as to why Shogun has disappeared. LR controls the Justicar, a group of elite girl-soldiers fighting crimes. There are only 5. (lol)
One of the councilors had lost his parents to the Lord Regent in the past. (this is told via character intro paragraphs) He is plotting something. Apparently this leaked because we see two Justicar girls trying to infiltrate his compound, which is hilarious because the Lord Regent can simply send guards to arrest him, but no, it has to be Justicars because we have to see them in action in revealing costume. Two justicar girls kill several of the councilor's lackeys in horrible actions scenes, and the councilor flees. He somehow ends up going after the Lord Regent in the next scene. (???) Lord Regent is saved at the last moment by Asumi, the main character of the visual novel and now a personal bodyguard to LR, as she slays the councilor. Before dying, the councilor tells the Lord Regent that the LR murdered his parents to which LR admits. Asumi asks LR if this is true, LR says yes, then Asumi kills the LR. The conversation goes like this(paraphrased, but pretty accurate):
Asumi: Why didn't you tell me you murdered his parents?
LR: Because I appointed you as my bodyguard. You owe me.
Asumi: Die!
You must be wondering WTF is going on; bear with me, it gets worse.
Then we have a random guy who protects an elderly woman from robbery by killing some thugs. The elderly woman gets intimated, calls him freak(wut?) and reports to guards cuz... reasons. This guy gets mad and starts massacring everyone, including the guards and the old woman. So 5 justicar girls go after him. The commander of Justicar, Kami, appears, gets stabbed, and dies in few pages. That's literally it for her role in the GN. Another Justicar girl is killed too. (Meanwhile we learn that Justicars wear a steal bra because it blocks swords.) This guy decides to go after the councilors cuz they must be accountable for the mistreatment he received by the elderly woman, right? He ends up killing one of the councilors then dies from bleeding wounds.
So civil war breaks out as a result. Don't ask me why. I don't even understand which sides are fighting. I think it's between councilors and the lord regent or perhaps the emperor, but the LR is dead, the emperor was killed by shogun many years ago, shogun has never showed up since he killed the emperor, and 2 councilors died and the rest were protected by Justicars. Anyway, justicars went rogue since they killed their boss LR, so they decide to end the civil war by killing leaders of both factions. All the leaders are killed by justicar girls(....ROFL), and civil war ends because there are no one to lead armies. Hence, democracy is introduced to Japan and the justicars are hailed as legendary heroes. Yay. Join me in tears of joy for the abhorrent story finally came to an end and you don't need to have more headaches trying to wrap your head around this... this giant pile of nonsense.
I know I didn't summarize the plots 100% accurately, but most dialogues and narrative texts are gibberish and this is the best I could do.
Umm... that's all. I don't know how GN turned out so bad when the VN was kind of OK. Only buy this if you are curious about an example of excruciatingly bad storytelling. Btw, thanks to the reviewer in the main game page who said the GN has much more interesting story than the VN, encouraging me but this GN. I hope every game the reviewer buys turns out to be *this interesting* in the future.. I didn’t enjoyed the writing. The art style wasn’t great either, and the characters and a few situations were bad/didn’t made much sense. Overall, I don’t recommend this graphic novel.. I got bored reading the comic and scrolled through it quickly because:
- Art is -C grade for most content. The only art I give a B grade to are for the artist's work on the cover and the Asumi/Rei page art in the bonus section
- Fanservice is just cringeworthy in how it was forced and unrealistic in some moments, like how Asumi used the same sexual appeal trick twice when there are other ways an assassin could've gotten passed the guards. AND she still gets away with the trick. The Edo guards suck at their jobs, and the obvious humour that played out from it is tasteless.
- Hardly followed the plot because the direction and characters of the story are poorly planned out and scattered in the writing development.
And one thing stuck out to me is Rei's character design, who looks too much like Sinon from Sword Arts Online. Rei's main weapon, her sniper rifle, is also Sinon's main weapon. Put all of that together, and I call that violating SAO copyright.. I got bored reading the comic and scrolled through it quickly because:

Not hating on the artist because it's way better then anything I could do, but it just doesn't hold up to the cover art. Also, Rei is basically a copy/pasted Sinon from SAO. While I like the premise of the story and the world building, the writing itself was really bad.
I got it for 49 cents on sale because I enjoyed the Sword of Asumi VN, but I would not recommend anyone getting this graphic novel, especially for full price.. Great piece of work. Considering how short the graphic novel was, I think $1,99 was a bit pricey, although I enjoyed it.. Great piece of work.
