Beautifully dark and disturbing game. The story draws you in and slowly reveals the mysteries of this strange family. I'm about halfway through and so far have found the puzzles well balanced with easy to moderate difficulty. Well worth the asking price. Highly recommended.. I gave birth to a little girl on 11/13/18. We named her Rose. In this game, I created a fetus in a test tube with some se'men, an egg, an elixir and some water. The game named her Rose. Best life simulator ever. 10/10. I played this right after finishing Rusty Lake Hotel. Although Rusty Lake: Roots referenced Rusty Lake Hotel, I should have played Rusty Lake: Roots first because it was wonderful. The puzzle design was much better and the various scenes were more linear, in a good way - unlike in Rusty Lake Hotel, you didn't find yourself having to replay a scene (or the whole game) because you hadn't done things exactly right.
I originally only intended to play this for a little bit and then go to bed, but the characters and story completely grabbed me. Unlike Rusty Lake Hotel, I actually found Rusty Lake: Roots to be a bit creepy, and the incredibly messed up relationships and Vanderboom family history had me hooked. It also didn't hurt that most of the puzzles were relatively easy to figure out and the harder ones usually weren't so hard that my frustration outweighed my enjoyment.
My biggest complaint is that the sliding controls were occasionally glitchy for me. However, it helped that the game still included buttons I could click to slide left or right within a particular scene.
Edit: I nominated this for Steam's 2017 "Haunts My Dreams" award because this game stuck with me for weeks after I finished it. I even went out and methodically played through all the related Cube Escape games on my phone so that I could learn more of the overall story.. Having played all the Cube Escape games and Rusty Lake Hotel, I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Rusty Lake: Roots, and it did not disappoint.
Like all the games in the series, the artwork is amazing, and the storyline intreguing / incredibly creepy. This is probably the most lengthy game yet, with 33 individual puzzles to solve all linking in to the overall story. While the puzzles have the same kind of logic as the rest of the series, I felt this game had slightly easier puzzles to start and the additional dialogue at the start means even if you're new to the series you should be able to pick up the problem solving.
Cannot recommend this enough.. Best Rusty Lake yet, such a great series of puzzles with a really good story.
The ending was slightly weak, but the rest of the game was great which more than made up for it. Definatly worth the £1.99 I paid for it and can't wait until the next is realeased. Loved it! I wish it was longer though!! :D. Not enough of my friends seem interested in this game, which makes me sad. Maybe they don't know about it? This is Rusty Lakes. A puzzle adventure game about a nice peaceful family living along side the infamous rusty lake itself. Ok so maybe it isn't that peaceful.., I mean you do happen to have inherited the place when your grandfather died. But hey those always work out right? Long story short, Rusty lake games are well put together, rather pretty, and that kind of game that makes you think about life and death. Happiness and struggle. Experience the life and times in snippits of various generations, and help them a bit with their woes.. A very plain hidden object game requiring more patience than intelligence. On top of the boredom I felt after a bit, it surprisingly managed to disgust me with its gory content.. I played the three "full" Rusty Lake games in a random order, and this was the last one I came to. It also happens to be the best, as it is neatly segmented into short vignettes that are easy to do just one (or two, or five) of in a single session, while telling a much more complex and cohesive overall story than the other games did. Definitely recommended for that.
The one big caveat is that the final puzzle (Level 33, "Roots") is completely unfair and makes no sense, which is of course extremely frustrating. After making my way through all 32 earlier puzzles by my own puzzly prowess, it was infuriating to find that there was a hidden logic in the final puzzle that really, really makes no sense (i.e. even the walkthroughs I consulted were like, "So, uh, maybe we were supposed to guess this because... (plausible but far-fetched guess)??!") So don't feel bad if you have to cheat on that one. All the rest of the game is great if you are into this type of puzzle game, they just managed to ♥♥♥♥ up the last 30 seconds in the most irritating possible way.
