Professor Sydney Fox is head of the archeology department at Chicago University. She can inspire her students very well, but is often absent on short notice, unable to resist the call of the field, which is however tolerated because it can pay off big for the university's museum as she's a world-class relic hunter. Her scholarly brilliant English academic assistant, Nigel Bailey, has his reservations about being dragged along all over the world on most of her treasure hunts, but puts up with the risks and inconveniences of the guests out of a sense of duty and because of the appeal the athletic lady adventurer seems to have on most men in the series. The third permanent cast member is their office secretary, during most seasons vain airhead Claudia whose rich father is frightfully well-connected, notably with the chancellor, later the far more competent Karen Petrusky; both usually stay in college, minding things there and doing some research, booking etcetera, but on occasion also get to play a more active part, and in both cases tend to make use of their female charms too. While each episode is a treasure hunt on its own, some other characters recur twice or more, mainly rival relic hunters and/or personal acquaintances, such as Sydney's many former lovers, a secret agent and Nigel's brother.
With the help of her faithful assistant from England Nigel Bailey the university professor Sydney Fox moonlights as a relic hunter. Together they travel around the globe in search for stolen relics to be returned to museum always risking their lives.
I agree with all those who consider this show closer to Indiana Jones than Tomb Raider. And yes, there may be occasional plot holes and things that can be classified as "unlikely" but the show doesn't presume to be a "The adventures of Jaque Cousteau", a strictly scientific exploration documentary. This is for fun and it's meant to be taken likely. Just turn off your perfectionist "but wouldn't it make more sense if..." and enjoy the puzzles, riddles and fight scenes.

The cast is very well chosen, Tia Carrere and Christien Anholt make a great team and I was really dissapointed when Lindy Booth left the show. Some people consider her annoying, but at least she had some individuality as opposed to the girl who replaced her, who seems so much more... generic. Bland if you wish.

Basically, just sit back for an hour and relax. And if you're a history buff who happens to notice some discrepencies then just laugh at them. After all, RH is meant for entertainment not education. There have only been three episodes of Relic Hunter so far, but I really like it so far. The plotlines are interesting, the theme song is cool, and Sydney and Nigel are awesome characters.

At first I thought it was a lot like Tomb Raider, but I wouldn't call it a TR ripoff. I hope it gets more publicity soon - it doesn't even have any fan pages yet. Too bad it had to get stuck on UPN, not even during primetime. Well, I hope Relic Hunter has many more episodes, because it's great!
