I not gonna go to into detail but I will say this is simply the best game ever made.

This beats previous favourites such as Resident Evil 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV.

This is a masterclass in what a game should be.

You won't regret it.

Even if you aren't a fan of the western genre you should get this because it has a brilliant story and breathtaking missions.

Don't let me down. This is indeed "GTA in the Wild West". But by the time you realize this, you don't even care. Rockstar has created -the- truly immersive Western video game. Everything I love about this company is right here: the through-the-roof replay value, the epic sense of adventure (complete with a ridiculously huge map of terrain), the thrilling shootouts, the fully open world to go and explore ...

Granted, I pursued 100%, but it took me a couple of months to obtain (there's that much to do); the outfit checklists, the gambling, scavenging, treasure hunting, odd jobs, sharpshooting, bounty hunting, bank robbing, horse-thieving, and on and on. Not once did I get bored. Unlike the usual number of street-races in a GTA, there are thankfully only 2 here (though Rockstar does make up for that in the frustration department with poker and hunting cougars (I haaaaaate those flippin' cats). But that frustration doesn't make a dent in my love for this game.

There's a palpable sense of atmosphere, and that's my favorite part. Walking through the dusty old towns, plains and sun-blasted Mexico feels like you've been sucked into a big-screen Western. The scenery is incredible (check out the rock structures in Mexico) and the open world is nigh-intimidating. Unfortunately, they made the main character a married man, so there are no fun times with whores (an odd choice). 'Course, there's still the hallmark jabbing satire we've come to love. Those nickelodeon movies are subversively hilarious.

Outstanding game. Plenty of reason to spend money on a PS3.

The map in the game says it's 1910, but it has been stated the game takes place in 1911. From RDR Wikia:

A mysterious and metaphysical character, there are several interpretations of the character's strange behavior and apparent supernatural abilities. None have been confirmed, although much of the evidence points to him being a Saint Peter figure, shown by his description of himself as 'an accountant... in a way', which could refer to the common Christian belief that Saint Peter waits at the gates of Heaven to welcome the deceased and makes record of them. He later reminds John that he will be responsible for his actions, referring to Divine Judgement. Moreover, he tells Marston that he has forgotten 'far more important people' than himself, likely referring Marston's lack of belief in God. During his appearance in Mexico, the fact that his mode of transport is a mule rather than a horse suggests humility and possibly intentional poverty/selflessness, hinting further at a Saintly figure. Also, the last encounter with him takes place at the site of Marston's grave, which the Strange Man notes is 'a fine spot'. Despite this, there are many interpretations of the true nature of the Strange Man.
