Lives up to its name. Finally a game whose main character I can relate to. In fact if he says "in fact" one more time I'm going to break something.. surprised at how polished the game is. enjoyed it.. And so, this game makes me uncomfortable in ways I can't describe. My name is max and i feel personally attacked by this game.. So rare to see a game about a real-life disorder come together with RPG elements. I deal with young people on a daily basis in my work and I have had a couple of autistic kids in my care. This game has actually taught me many things I didn't know about autism. Thank you so much to the developer for putting your heart and soul into such a masterpiece.. Drawing heavily from Evangelion, MaAJ is the story of a young boys quest to find not only his place in the world, but also to attempt to understand the hearts and minds of others. However, where immense care was put into making Shinjis struggles feel relatable and his mindset coherent, the creators of MaAJ forgo this effort by simply giving the protagonist autism. Thus, any of Maxs actions can simply be handwaved away by his disability: Max flipped over a table and started screaming? Oh, well hes autistic. Shinji flipped over a table and started screaming? Well, its related to his feelings towards Asuka and how he feels as though she refuses to be understood by him and (from here the viewer would continue to think about Shinji and his identity, and whether Asuka is truly at fault in this case) In the end, Max is a flat and uninteresting character, and MaAJ fails in its efforts at presenting us with a compelling story. Perhaps the game is aware of this: roughly two-thirds in, Max becomes trapped within a strange womb-like enclosure in a scene highly reminiscent of Shinjis own entrapment within the angel Leliel. Guided by his inner self in the form of a dinosaur, Max attempts to reconcile his own identity with his mental problem and the world around him. Where Shinjis internal struggle ends happily, for Max there are no congratulations, and when the scene ends he finds himself locked within a room of isolation. Indeed, Maxs life appears to be one of eternal torture, trapped in a world that refuses to change in much the same way that the creators do not allow him to change. Despite this moment of likely accidental genius I cannot recommend the game due to, again, the otherwise uninteresting nature of Maxs character and his lack of any serious development. My hope is that the developers learn from this experience as I believe that they have the potential to create something truly meaningful; they just need to avoid such silly cop-outs as autism when writing their characters next time.. If you were hoping to fight Electric Death in this autism themed RPG, then this is the game for you. wait this isn't mad max. quot;Autism Simulator 2017, Activison's newest must play installment to the Call of Duty franchise." - IGN. How this game was presented was simply amazing. It really was made with the upmost care and respect to those with ASD. Of course I had to play it being on the spectrum and I was disappointed. It really could be a good tool to those who might not understand Autism or who wish to understand the disorder better.
