This game is highly enjoyable so far. If you enjoy games like Myst, this will be up your alley. You'll need to get analogue for some of the puzzles, so fetch a pen and paper, and pay attention to your surroundings for hidden clues. The atmosphere really sets the mood and setting is beautiful.. Well, ten hours played and finished. A beautiful game, no idea what the story was, didnt really care. The puzzles were good, the progression through the environments which were beautifully drawn was good. The ghost stories added some mystery and some of the letters added humour, eccentric man takes kids from the village because he thinks kids would make his home noisier and they would enjoy it there, not realising that people wouldn't take kindly to someone taking their kids.dotty old fool. Walking simulator.puzzle game.mystery.horror.It doesnt really fit any of these labels but has bits of all of them. Small Indie dev team have made such a good job here. Flaws, well what game has none of those, some snagging of the camera at times where it whizzes around until it settles a second later, not game breaking, not even an irritation, just an observable phenomenom. Really interesting game that excelled in sight and sound and for ten hours I thought it excellent value for money.. Do you like puzzle games with story and exploration? Here's a game for you. So how're the puzzles? There are some reoccuring pattern matching-type ones in various forms, with the main puzzles having quite a degree of variety to them, and there are plenty of them. This isn't "The Witness" though, the puzzles have meaning in the environment and story, it's not just a fun house of meaningless puzzles to solve. There was only one puzzle that I got super-stuck with, but there is an on-demand hint system to help you out. How's the story? It certainly kept me interested enough, and I won't mention specifics as to not spoil it, but the game is certainly driven very much by the story. Exploration? The graphics/style are very nice to look at, though not gob-smackingly jaw-dropping like "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter". You can poke around in various rooms and environments to find more stuff to read and look at, as well as turn on every candle and light you can see, prettying up the environment even more. The weather and time-of-day changes throughout as well. My only major gripe is the lack of FOV control, though the default is just-about acceptable. Bit irritating though, as I did ask about it when they demoed it at EGX, and they said it would be added! Overall, recommended for people who like these kinds of games.. The atmosphere in this game is very well done and the voice acting is superb. Some of the Puzzle designs were very rewarding to figure out.. tldr: A game that has a lot of fun and interesting puzzels, a lot of love has been put into this game! Longer: Art: There is a really nice artstyle that will likely stand the test of time. It is made in Unity which blew my mind because I thought it was Unreal Engine 4 stuff but alas it was Unity! Gameplay: Cool and interesting puzzels, some familiar puzzels from other games but also a variety of new puzzels I had not encountered before (Wont mention them since it would be a spoiler).. The game could be described as a walking sim with puzzle solving along the way and is pretty much linear in its completion. If you enjoyed Quern, I think you should enjoy this game too. For the first few hours of gameplay, you follow your sister's trail as she mysteriously wandered off in the woods. Then you finally reach a mansion and the ghost town next to it where the rest of the game follows and concludes. As the story unfolds, a few more areas are unlocked there, but you will mostly move back and forth between them. Also, let's note that even if you will encounter different ghosts during the game, there is absolutely nothing scary in this game. This is not an horror game. Puzzles I am not sure which category of players was targeted by this game, but players used to puzzle games might be disappointed as most puzzles are quite straightforward in their resolution. Only in the end, when you reach the island area, will you get the most interesting puzzles in the game. But beware that a good understanding of English is necessary to solve those puzzles. Exploration If you want to better understand the story, a bit of exploration is necessary. Letters, drawing and photos are scattered all over the place. You will have to open every drawers, inspect every corner in order to find any document that will tell you more about the very excentric owner of the mansion (the inventor who made all those puzzles the player has to solve) and the different staff members working on the estate. Graphics The least I can say is that the game is really pretty. A strange thing is that we can only use a lantern (which is only found when we arrive at the mansion) inside buildings but never outside. But I guess it is an aesthetic choice from the devs. There are hundreds of candles and lanterns everywhere that are beautifully lighting the path and also give a bit of an eerie feeling to the game. Saving The shortcoming of the game is that the save system is kind of flawed. The game uses automatic saves that can only be activated at some location, after you solve some puzzle (but not for all puzzles) or when you reach some new dialogue event (but not always). That is kind of cumbersome as you can not save whenever you want. The best alternative I found was to go back to one of the location save points I had previously encountered (mostly in town or in the mansion).. Lake Ridden was a lovely surprise while it lasted. The story was engaging and a nice mix of voiceover and eerie journals and other things to read. It has a very distinct Myst feel even though the world is a bit more comprehensible. The puzzles are mostly challenging and rewarding, although I found it was easy to guess on a couple toward the end that took away from that a little. The music is deceptively light at times, but it introduces this great dynamic of making you feel comfortable as if you're wrapped in its familiarity and then shattering that when you hear some wild animal screeching out in the woods. Maybe it's not for everyone, but it worked for me and was a nice change of pace from the "this is a spooky game, and you're going to know it" motif and was a pleasant surprise that it was. That's the other thing; this game has a horror element to it. There are a few jump scares, but mostly it comes from a scary and ominous atmosphere. Mainly, this is thanks to the storyline and the loneliness of walking around this once inhabited desolate world. Now, minor spoilers here, so if you plan to play this to experience it yourself (and you should), then stop reading and give it a go. This is also where pretty much my only gripe is. The game starts pretty linearly, go here, figure out how to open this door, rinse and repeat. Then the game opens up and lets you walk around this abandoned town, in some of the buildings, and a mansion on the hill (which you revisit from time to time). I felt like after the second or third time backtracking between the two and spending 30 or so minutes to solve a puzzle, the pace slowed too much, especially in the later game. At a certain point I just wanted to figure things out or have another major plot point introduced, but instead, I felt like I was spinning my wheels and hoping for the end instead of enjoying it. And that's the other thing; the game is kind of short. It took me 7 hours to complete in two sittings. It's not that it needed to be longer and again, it would have called for a new plot point to make it worthwhile, but I would love to have seen another new area and have different puzzle variety to tackle. Perhaps this could be solved with DLC, where you can play a different storyline in the same world. I'm not sure of the dev's plans for the games, but one could only hope. I also had a glitch where I stopped playing after the basement area, and when I came back the game wouldn't trigger the next objective, so I had to replay the previous chapter to fix it. I'm sure not everyone will encounter this, but worth mentioning. Also, don't look at the chapter selection if you don't want to know where you go next. For some reason it lists all the areas of the game even if you haven't gotten that far yet. In summary and gripes aside, this game is absolutely worth playing if you like atmosphere puzzlers with an engaging story. The price may be high for some but at the very least add it to your wishlist and buy it on sale and prepare to immerse yourself in its bleak and gorgeous world.. Really wish there were more games like this, my favourite genre. It's a 'walking sim' with plenty of nice puzzles and exploring to keep you progressing. Similar to games like Ethan Carter, maybe not up to that games graphics but the graphics are certainly not bad at all, more puzzles than Ethan as well. I have around 4 hours on it and am loving it. Nice to have a bug free game to get lost in. I believe it is 7-9 hours long, hope it's nearer 9 for me.. Interesting game that I really enjoyed. It's a shame the developers didn't find proper success with this game. Worth playong of you're looking for a interesting story with some puzzles.. I enjoyed this game a lot, the puzzles were well designed with logical answers and the atmosphere was great. I completed the game in 8 hours with some side exploring. I recommend this to fans of puzzle games and hope for more games like this from the publisher in the future.
