How to cope with long layover flights and claim compensation for the same?

You check your ticket and you see a 12-hour layover out in the middle of nowhere. Or you miss your connection or your flight is delayed. Have you ever got this feeling? Depression sets in even before starting your trip. Hold on as you can easily turn long layover flights into some adventure if you have a plan. You got stuck in an airport with nothing to do. Rather than fretting in the same place for hours, you can explore the city you are stuck in.

In 2009, I visited Turkey for the first time after making a Turkish Airlines booking and it was on a layover. I got six hours between flights and I had nothing to do at that moment. After spending some time at the airport I found that there was some special deal for transit passengers of Turkish Airlines. The city tour has been organized for them and I didn’t miss the opportunity to explore Turkey for the first time. I enjoyed my journey so much that I made a plan to get back to the country again.

You are allowed to leave an airport during a layover except in some cases. Don’t be the victim of flight layovers and take advantage of these tours. Moreover, you can ask for compensation from the airline for wasting your time.

How to claim compensation?

If your flight is late for more than three hours, then you are eligible to claim compensation for the delay. Before claiming the compensation make sure to check if you are eligible for it or not. There are two ways to get the compensation, which are stated below.

  • You can get it by yourself.
  • You can go to a company to claim compensation for yourself.

Claiming compensation on your own is way cheaper than getting to the company. Companies will ask for some amount of your company; if you get it on your own you will get the full amount. It is not compulsory that you will surely get the compensation.

A friend of mine made British Airways reservations and claimed compensation on her own for the flight layover and she got the amount after sending dozens of emails. While another friend of mine did the same but didn’t get anything in spite of millions of efforts. Last year my flight got delayed and I contacted some company to claim my compensation. Though it took several months to get money, but all efforts were done by the company. For me, I didn’t go through all this hassle so I personally recommend claiming through the company.
