Jeff Talley, a former LAPD hostage negotiator, has moved himself away from his failed career outside of Los Angeles, and away from his wife and daughter when three perpetrators move in on an unsuspecting family. But the family's father has a secret which might compromise his kin, and one of the criminals is about to jump over the edge. Jeff Talley has to get everybody to survive the night......if he can.
Devastated by a failed hostage situation which resulted in the deaths of a young mother and her child, LAPD negotiator Jeff Talley exits Los Angeles for a no profile job as chief of police in the low crime hamlet of Bristo Camino, a small town in Ventura County. When three delinquent teenagers follow home a family intending to steal their car, they have inadvertently picked the wrong house on the wrong day. The trio find themselves trapped in a multi-million dollar compound on the outskirts of town, owned by an accountant working for a mysterious crime enterprise. Panicked, the teenagers take the family hostage, placing Talley in exactly the kind of situation he never wanted to face again. Soon after, Talley readily hands authority of the hostage situation over to the Ventura County Sheriffs Department and leaves the scene. Meanwhile, inside the compound is digital information, which is time sensitive and invaluable to the mysterious criminals and critical to their enterprise. They will stop at nothing to get what belongs to them. Talley is forced to resume the command he abandoned, where the stakes quickly evolve into a hostage situation far more volatile and terrifying than anything he could ever imagine.
Not only is the source material, a book of the same name by Robert Crais, the movie is edge of your seat brilliant from the first minute to the last. FANTASTIC performances by the entire cast. Brilliant cinematography. I think the creepiest bad guy on film in the character of Mars, played by Ben Foster. He haunts my nightmares!

There are some standard plot elements but they are so brilliantly fit together with twists and turns you don't even notice on the first viewing. I saw this first on the big screen where it's really massively effective, particularly in the close up sequences. But it translates very well to the small screen.

Enjoy the film, read the book. Both are brilliant and the book will flesh out the film. Robert Crais is a genius! A forgotten aspect of movies seems to be drawing the viewer in...I mean really drawing the viewer in! The opening, cardboard cut-out, stylish credits of this flick HOSTAGE immediately grabbed my attention. Then HOSTAGE starts off with a bang with a standoff, which opens the film. This simplistic, visual opening sequence, along with a thrilling score, draws you in to the world of HOSTAGE. You KNOW you are about to be thrilled!

Enter our hero, LA police hostage negotiator Jeff Talley (played by none other than the great action hero Bruce Willis). Willis is the thinking man's action hero, using smarts and instints more so than brute force. Not as physically imposing as other action heroes, Willis has to out-think his opponents. It doesn't hurt that Willis has this uncanny ability to make the viewer BELIEVE in what they're seeing. Without him, this film does not work!

In the film's opening scene, Talley fails to save a boy and his mother from the boy's deranged father and this haunts Talley throughout the film. Flash forward 1 year: Talley has moved to a small town in Southern California where of course he expects no major criminal activity, just dishing out parking tickets. Still haunted by the events that started the tilm, Talley is estranged from his wife (Serena Scott Thomas) and daughter (Rumer Willis, Bruce's real-life daughter with Demi Moore).

But Talley finds he is not free and gets embroiled in yet another hostage situation. Three local teenage delinquents take a man his 2 children (daughter and son) hostage at their home because after a run-in at a local gas station. As it turns out the man, Walter Smith (played with both comic aplomb and superb dramatic timing by Kevin Pollak) is very wealthy and his home is a hilltop fortress with security gadgets and safeguards all over the place. The hostages and their takers are captive in the house and the police, local and big-city, stand guard waiting for demands. Talley recuses himself from the entire situation b/c of his last failure in LA.

The 3 boys are Dennis and Kevin Kelly (well played by Jonathan Tucker and Marshall Alman) and Mars Krupchak (played by Ben Foster in a truly scary, provocative performance). While Dennis is the nominal leader of the gang, Mars is really the brains of the operation, to the misfortune of Dennis and Kevin. Mars is a true sociopath; he is very detached from everything and everyone; he is totally obsessed with Smith's daughter Jennifer (played by engaging newcomer Michelle Horn). Smith's younger child is Tommy (impressively played by Jimmy Bennett) and he is Talley's link to what is going on in the house. All the young actors in this film are very good and show a surprising amount of acting credibility.

The situation becomes doubly complex as it turns out that Smith is an accountant for a shady, mysterious organization. Smith has encoded vital account information on a disc and was planning to deliver it to his superiors when the boys took his family hostage. Now with the disc stuck in the fortress, these uber-thugs want Talley to negotiate the situation to get to the disc because they need it within a certain time limit or it is useless. They force him into it by kidnapping his wife and daughter.

So there are TWO overlapping hostage situations! Herein lies the brilliance of HOSTAGE: it dares to have 2 mutually inclusive hostage crises. Willis is entirely believable relaying Talley's dilemma as he must resume his negotiating skills and appear completely detached all the while knowing the outcome will determine whether his family lives or dies.

The style of the film really stands out as it has these fluorescent jump cuts that transition the film smoothly from one sequence to the next. Setting the main hostage crisis in this hilltop fortress also allows for a lot of elaborate camera angles and overhead shots that are beautiful to look at.

HOSTAGE was directed by Florent Siri and this guy is a newcomer worth watching. A stylish, elaborate, tense, thrilling film! My new theory is that Willis' own aesthetic soul is more old-world than he knows, and that he works best with directors who either are (Luc Besson) or might as well be (M. Night Shyamalan) European.
