LAPD detective Tom Ludlow is a ruthlessly efficient, unorthodox undercover cop. Captain Jack Wander always covers for Tom, as do even his somewhat jealous colleagues. After technically excessive violence against a vicious Korean gang during the liberation of a kidnapped kid sex slave, Tom becomes the target of IA's hotshot, captain James Biggs, who feels passed over after Wander's promotion to chief. Tom's corrupt, disloyal ex-patrol partner Terrence Washington sides with IA but is killed during a shop robbery in Tom's presence.
An undercover cop, disillusioned by the recent murder of his wife, is implicated in the murder of an officer and must struggle to clear himself.
How many movies have you seen open with an alarm clock waking up someone? You must have lost count. So right at the start, you get a hint that this one is going to be fully formulaic. Promise kept.

But this one goes all out. The first scene establishes Detective Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) as your typical good-and-bad cop have a few shot of vodka before action, trigger-happy, kills without questioning then sets the scene up to give the effect that the shooting is completely unavoidable. One-time buddy-partner Detective Washington (a model black-and-white odd couple) gives him hell for not giving the suspects a chance to legal defense. While there is no love lost between them, when Washington is shot dead in what looks like a convenience store robbery, Ludlow gets suspicious and decides to dig deep. Following the usual formula of going from one lead to the next, Ludlow gradually finds out that by comparison, he himself is nowhere near to being a bad cop. The end is so far-fetched that rather than drawing gasps, it verges on being farcical. Or perhaps it really is intended to be comical in disguise. I don't know.

Keanu Reeves fan will be pleased to see him, after 2 years' absence since his romantic sojourning in "The lake house", back in his favourite role of a cop walking around like a ton of live explosive. But there are others too. Forest Whitaker, still reasonably fresh with his Oscar crown, plays Ludlow's boss and mentor. His acting ability does bring a little more to the character Captain Wander. "Fantastic Four" Chris Evans, also coming off a romantic interlude (Scarlett Johansson's boyfriend in "The nanny diaries"), follows Ludlow around as his greenhorn sidekick. Naomie Harris, who should be reasonably familiar to regular movie goers, plays a small role of Washington's wife-turned-widow. Martha Higareda, new face from Mexico playing Ludlow's girlfriend, does well what she is supposed to do in this movie look pretty.

All told, this movie, with one or two good moments, is generally very average but watchable. I'm very pleased with the top comments I read here, because this movie is intelligent. atifrahman is very right when he said that critics must be crazy, in fact they are! One critic I read was speaking about Keannu Reeve as a bad cop waking up, drinking and shooting some guy without much reasons. So this is what I was expecting, a stupid story about a cop doing bad things without punishments. But this movie is so much more intelligent and subtile, making hard to blame the "bad" cop.

And, contrary to The Departed (who has a quite stupid storyline), this movie is believable! Remember, in The Departed, just out of the police acadamy graduating party, the guy played by Matt Damon just meet the crime boss while all those police men around without an inch of nervosity. Nothing as imbecile here. After all the actorly fireworks, Street Kings concludes that the LAPD is an institution where even the well-intentioned can't work clean. Okay. What else?
Street Kings is based on a screenplay by screenwriters James Ellroy, Kurt Wimmer, and Jamie Moss. It is a Japanese phrase, normally used to address someone midday. The direct translation is "how is this day?" For evening, you would say "Kon Ban Wa". The character Biggs is captain of the Internal Affairs LAPD division. Ultimately his job is to uncover dangerous truths and do damage control through legal means. He is also passed up for promotion of Commander which went to the character of Forrest Whitaker.
