Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.
In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father is locked in prison for smuggling. When his brother-in-law Andy dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.
A former smuggler(Mark Wahlberg) who has moved away from that life, he now runs his own security business, and also has a beautiful wife(Kate Beckinsale) and three great kids, life couldn't s be any better. Until his wife's brother, who is a smuggler, and messes up on a job. That puts him and his family in danger with a dangerous drug dealer(Giovanni Ribisi). So now the former smuggler must go back to his old ways in order to save his family, but will he make through, or will he be in over his head?

A pretty entertaining crime thriller. Mark Wahlberg is good in the title role, like a old style tough guy. Kate Beckinsale as his wife was alright, but not strong enough. Giovanni Ribisi was awesome at being evil, you just enjoyed not liking him. Ben Foster and Lucas Haas are also good too. Also a great crime drama, that really grabs you hard. At time it can be predicable, but still entertaining. Typically, during the winter months most of the films that come out are late releases for films with award aspirations or, as in most cases, the dumping grounds for movies that have very low expectations. In recent years there were a few films that surprised by being better than anticipated, such as The Edge of Darkness and Unknown.

This year's first surprise hit is the crime thriller Contraband, directed by the relatively unknown, Baltasar Kormákur. Kormákur does a commendable job in ensuring that Contraband's pacing is fast and yet steady. There's a lot going on, however it's never difficult to follow. Kormákur's strength lies in the drama and intensity he builds into each scene. Kormákur is able to maintain the viewer's interest at all times; whether the scene takes place in New Orleans, in Panama or on the shipping vessel traveling between the two destinations. Each location is visually appealing and also provides great locations for the gritty action that takes place.

Mark Wahlberg, as reformed smuggler Chris Farraday, leads a very good cast. Chris attempts to make a better life for himself and his family, and as is often the case, is pulled back into the life he'd left behind. Wahlberg is at his best when given an excellent script and quality direction, as proved in such films as The Italian Job, Invincible, and Four Brothers. Contraband is another film of that variety, and Wahlberg is exceptional. Kate Beckinsale, as Chris' wife, Kate Farraday, adds a dramatic element to the film. Beckinsale has made a career out of playing women capable of taking care of themselves as well as being an action star in the Underworld series of films. Ben Foster is well cast as Chris' best friend, Sebastian. Foster excels in supporting roles such as this, as evidenced by his performances in Alpha Dog and The Mechanic. Giovanni Ribisi gives one of his best performances as the violently twisted Tim Briggs. The underrated Ribisi gives Briggs one of the most annoying voices in film, but somehow he makes it work. The rest of the supporting cast is equally praiseworthy and are utilized perfectly.

Contraband is the style of film that comes along after all the holiday pictures, romantic comedies or crappy horror movies (i.e. The Devil Inside) have come and run their course, and viewers need something to quench their thirst for excitement. Contraband provides the edge of your seat action thriller that caters to everyone. At a time when there aren't many movies capable of drawing viewers in, this is one that won't disappoint.

When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would.
