In the future, long after the Batman has driven himself into exile, his legacy lives on in the form of the Birds of Prey--Black Canary, Oracle, and the Huntress.
Now Gotham's Undercover Superhero Batman has disappeared leaving behind a daughter from his long-time love Catwoman. Her name is Helena the mysterious superhero known as "The Huntress". She has teamed up with the paralyzed hero "Batgirl" together they meet up with their next teammate Dinah Lance. Dinah is a telepath and psychic who had terrifying dreams about Batgirl's brutal accident. They must learn how to work together and become not only a team of superheroes but also a family.
Costumes: Fair to Poor - Nothing original or extraordinary. Helena/Huntress bustier boob squishers, port-hole tops (Ahoy mateys!), and leather fetish outfits which seem to be the modern equivalent of spandex

CGI/SPFX: Fair to Good - gravity-defying jumping, animated iris mods, computer interfaces, chroma-key backgrounds, etc.

Set Design & Filming: Exceptional detail, lighting, and intricacy with a considerable budget involved, yet realism is exchanged for a cartoonish ambiance

Location: Filmed entirely on the WB Studio Facilities...feels very synthetic. Perhaps this was the intent...to create a comic-book feel.

At times it seemed as cheesy as Power Rangers, but had some serious moments.

The final scene of each episode was predictable: All is well, corny anecdotes, good-guy (gal) comradery and witticisms, a Kumbayah segment at each episode end.

Overall impression: Not bad, but cannot compare to Smallville. I'm totally OK with the concept of retelling comic stories, embellishing the characters, histories, and plot. I'm not a die hard comic fan and can care less about the "Golden Age Huntress" inaccuracies, etc. etc. I like good entertainment as well as most people, yet this series isn't geared toward the average TV viewer. Most folks who are into DC comics will either like it or hate it because of the gross inaccuracies. I'm confused. How could the same production company with two extremely hot comic book properties produce such vastly different shows? The producers of Smallville and Birds of Prey both had loads to work with. So how come Smallville rocks and BOP bit the dust? For one thing, Smallville deals with the icon itself, whereas Batman shows up for one second in the teaser and then gets the heck out of Dodge, never to be seen again. What you're left with is the B-list cast of characters that come off more like cast-offs rather than interesting character studies. Potentially interesting characters are reduced to wisecracking, martial arts kicking, one-dimensional sideshow freaks. DCU mainstays are killed off without any real reason or need (other than ratings).

Smallville also respects the source material, where BOP disregards it. It also disregards normal convention. I mean, seriously, Alfred was old when Batman was a boy. How old must he be now that Batman's daughter is grown? And Huntress grew up, while Batgirl and Black Canary stay in their late 20's?? And who is this Huntress anyway? Smallville employed relative unknown actors who were talented, yet undiscovered. BOP seems to use recycled D-list actors who spend more time mugging and wisecracking rather than delving into the pathos of their characters. The characters are one dimensional. Huntress is the butt-kicking wise-acre, Dinah is the valley-girl-turned-psychic, and Oracle is a super-depressing ex-Batgirl. And that's all.

Smallville compels you to continue watching. Having viewed the BOP series at least twice, I still find no motivation to see the next show from episode to episode.

And Smallville took it to the next level. My own girlfriend who has never read a comic, nay, not even seen one Superman movie, is in love with this show. Whereas the only reason most people even know of BOP is that they are latent comic fanboys like myself.

There's lots to love about this series, don't get me wrong, but it's only for the hardcore fans and Batmaniacs who are absolute completists.
BOP is best appreciated as an "Elseworlds" story; it exists in a continuity all its own -- apart from the comics, films, etc. (i.e., in this continuity, Joker is alive.)

The show draws from several sources: the comics, the films, and "Batman: The Animated Series" (cf., Harley Quinn and the voice of Mark Hamill as the Joker.) Judging from the costume that is featured in the opening credits, we're assuming that the producers are basing their Catwoman upon the one featured in the 1992 film, "Batman Returns" (In the movie, Selina Kyle absorbs the essences of the cats -- nine lives, ability to always land on one's feet, etc. -- which revive her after Shreck pushes her off the building.) "Birds of Prey" is not about either Batman or Batgirl. The show is about Huntress, Dinah, and Oracle (who used to be Batgirl.) The title of the show -- "Birds of Prey" -- pretty much says it all.

It is stated in the show that Batman disappeared after the Joker killed Selina. Bruce Wayne left the city and is in an unknown location, but he is still alive. In the comics, that was what led Helena Wayne to become the Huntress. In more recent years, however, the Huntress character was revamped as a different person altogther, and has no family ties to either Batman or Catwoman. Blame the network for that one. According to executive producer Hans Tobeason, WB had "issues" with Oracle and her chair (what's more, they tried to freeze her out of the show altogether by limiting her screentime.)
