In 1870, a gang robs a train and steals a ceremonial Japanese sword meant as a gift from Japan to the U.S. President, prompting a man hunt to retrieve it.
It's 1870 in the American west. Outlaw Link Stuart and his bandits, which includes a suave Frenchman nicknamed Gauche, proceed to rob a train, taking the valuables from the passengers and looting the cargo. One of the passengers is the Japanese ambassador traveling to Washington to meet President Ulysses S. Grant, the Ambassador and his security detail of two samurai who are in their own private car. As such, one of the unexpected treasures the bandits is able to obtain is a ceremonial Japanese sword which was meant as a gift from the Japanese government to the President. But in the bandits' getaway, Link is double crossed by Gauche, who mistakenly assumes Link is killed in the ensuing melee. So Gauche now becomes the common enemy for both Link and the Ambassador, who is able to convince a reluctant Link to allow one of his samurai, Kuroda Jubie, to accompany him to locate Gauche and the loot. Although Gauche is a common enemy, the missions for Link and Kuroda are somewhat incompatible, as Link knows the samurai solely wants to kill Gauche to retrieve the sword, while Link has to get the information of the location of the loot from Gauche before he is killed. Also Link and Kuroda are working on different motives and different sensibilities, Link's motive which is largely monetary, while Kuroda's is solely honor, not being able to retrieve the sword which would mean dishonor and needing to go through the ritual of harakiri for eternal redemption. Although Kuroda is more than capable of taking care of himself, perhaps even more so than Link, he is still a fish out of water, and requires Link's knowledge of Gauche and the region to find him. Part of that knowledge is Cristina, Gauche's prostitute girlfriend who they may need to turn to find him. Beyond finding Gauche and trying to overcome their own differences, Link and Kuroda may have other natural obstacles of the region, namely other enemies not yet in the picture such as other bandits or marauding Comanches.
We have a reluctant buddy relationship between a Japanese Samaria: Kuroda, and an American desperado: Link(Charles Bronson),which is the focus of most of the screen play. We have another reluctant buddy relationship between Link and his sometimes outlaw partner and sometimes enemy :Gauche. The latter 2 are partners in a train holdup, involving other gang members. But during the last part of the robbery, Link is left for dead after dynamite is thrown into the car where he is. However, a group of Japanese, including the new Japanese ambassador to the US, revive him, and he miraculously escapes with little permanent damage. The ambassador demands that Link and Kuroda team up and catch Gauche, retrieving the gold ceremonial sword that was meant as a gift to President Grant, and killing Gauche, who killed the other Japanese guard.. Initially, Link refuses, especially because they are out in the middle of nowhere, without horses. But, eventually the ambassador imposes his will on Link. The 2 set out on foot across rocky desert, with somewhat different agendas against Gauche. Kuroda wants to kill Gauche immediately, whereas Link wants to take time to try to get Gauche to tell where he hid most of the considerable loot from the train, before killing him. The 2 periodically argue about this difference, threating to leave the other or fight. Toward the end of the film, Link and Gauche temporarily team up again to fight against a Comanche war party....Sometimes mixed in with these doings, is Ursula Audress, as Christine. She is Gauche's woman, and a participant of a bawdy house. She is kidnapped by Link and Kuroda, who hope she will aid in the capture and perhaps interrogation of Gauche. She tries to escape a time or two, getting mixed up with raiding Comanche, whom she mistook at a distance as Gauche's gang....Lots of dead bodies pile up during the course of the film, especially those of the US troops guarding the train, the outlaw gang, and the Comanche. Sometimes Gauche or Link rapid fire their pistol, like a machinegun, implausibly mowing down a half dozen. The screenplay has some other plausibility issues, as well.... Toshino Mifuni does an excellent job in his critical role as Kuroda. At one point, he has a contest with Link over stick vs. sword as a close-range weapon. Also, Link challenges him to a wrestling match, believing he will win. Kuroda even apparently kills a bothersome mosquito with a swipe of his sword.....The screenplay keeps your attention throughout, so I can recommend this film for those who are not put off by a high body count. Red Sun is the type of film they mean when they talk about international production. American Charles Bronson, Japanese Toshiro Mifune, German Ursula Andress, French Alain Delon, Italian Capucine and for good measure this film was shot on the plains of Spain which did not look like they'd seen much rain by Englishman Terrence Young.

The film concerns the train robbery of a gang in which Alain Delon is in charge. The money isn't enough for Delon, the train is carrying some Japanese passengers with a ceremonial samurai sword, a gift from their Emperor to our president. Two of three Japanese are killed, the mistake Delon makes when he decides the sword would make a nice souvenir is that he lives a real live Samurai in Toshiro Mifune alive with a vengeance quest. Delon makes a second mistake in double crossing Charles Bronson and not killing him as well. Bronson is a member of his gang who cuts all ties, but forms an uneasy alliance with Mifune.

Mifune wants Delon dead, but Bronson just wants him alive long enough to say where he's hidden the money. Bronson and Mifune go to a bordello run by Capucine to get Ursula Andress, a hooker favored by Delon as a hostage.

Red Sun works nicely as a film because of the interesting if antagonistic chemistry between Bronson and Mifune. From an uneasy alliance they develop a genuine regard for each other. As for Delon he has a gentlemanly demeanor that's a very thin veneer for one of the meanest mean streaks ever on the big screen.

Fans who are younger will recognize the plot of Red Sun being later used in a modern day feature Renegades with Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips as the uneasy allies with Rob Knepper as the gang leader with a mean streak.
