In June 1944, the U.S. decided to continue releasing islands from Japanese occupation beginning with Guam and the rest of the Mariana islands getting closer to Japan itself.
Guam, a U.S. territory, gets invaded by Japan a few days after Pearl Harbor and continues under the Asian country's occupation for two and a half years before the Americans take Guam back amid various Japanese casualties, either by suicide or self-defense. The Guam people are thankful as the episode ends on their smiling faces...A wonderful tribute to Guam and their resilience of survival from the Japanese invasion and eventual American rescue that makes this one of the most inspiring segments of Victory at Sea aided, as usual, by the stirring narration of Leonard Graves and music of Richard Rodgers. Another essential recommendation for any World War II historical fan out there.
In 1941, Guam in the Mariana Islands was a U.S. territory in the Pacific, fortified by an American garrison consisting of a few hundred Marines. Sixteen hundred miles south of Japan, the island was eyed by the Imperial Power for it's strategic location to carry the war forward. Only three days after Pearl Harbor, on December 10th, 1941, Japan overwhelmed American forces on Guam and captured it for the Emperor. Along with it fell Saipan and Tiniat, forming a cluster of death traps for any nation foolish enough to sail the area.

It would be two and a half years before America would muster the strength to confront the Japanese on Guam. In June 1944, while the Allies were conducting D-Day in Europe, powerful naval forces consisting of the American Fifth Fleet were bearing down on Guam. One hundred thousand American troops bolstered by another quarter million sailors were heading for the Marianas, with Guam and Saipan as their objective.

With knowledge of Allied plans, Japan ordered large numbers of young inexperienced fliers to take to the air and defend the Marianas. They were met by a prepared and experienced squadron of American fighter pilots, who literally blew them out of the sky at will, hence the title of this chapter. In the most catastrophic air battle in history, four hundred Japanese planes went down compared against the loss of only twenty six American pilots. Additionally, Japan lost three naval carriers and two tankers. This was the Battle of the Philippine Sea, breaking the naval aviation back of the Japanese.

Incredibly, right after the battle, America's Navy Seabees rebuilt Guam into the Pacific supermarket for the tools of war. The island became the Advance Headquarters for the Pacific Fleet, from which American Admiral Nimitz directed naval strategy for the final phase of the war in the Far East. With Tokyo sixteen hundred miles north, and Manila fifteen hundred miles to the west, the Allies, with their B-29's, were positioned for final victory in the Pacific.
