An American mercenary executes a coup in a small African country designed to bring to power another dictator friendlier to a British multinational company. Not a remake of _The Wild Geese_ but another and more faithful adaptation of the novel 'The Dogs of War'.
Recap: Jamie Shannon, a mercenary, is hired by a company to go on a information gathering mission to Zangora, an African country ruled by a unstable dictator. The company is uneasy to invest in country where the situation is not under control. So, posing as a bird photographer, he goes to Zangora to collect as much information as he can. But it soon end with him being arrested, beaten to pieces and deported. The company is unhappy about the whole Zangora situation though and hires Shannon to make a coup. Shannon puts his team together. but it is not easy to plan a military operation without alerting the authorities, especially when your employer don't trust you.

Comments: First of all, I have not read the novel, I just rented the movie expecting a good action filled war movie, as suggested by the poster for example. I was disappointed. The movie contains precious little war and almost less action. I can believe that the whole part when Shannon assembles his team works well in a book, when you can elaborate and create some suspense. In a movie, like this, when you have to cut it down to a few loosely connected scenes, all suspense is lost and all we have is a long dull waiting before the action finally begins. And when the coup starts it is a quick and easy one. Some of the potential personal vendettas that were established during his first visit is cut to a minimum, and the entire coup is without any trace of suspense. And the action was rather bad too.

3/10 Do I have a favorite Christopher Walken movie? Not really. He seems to be a couple of cans short of a six pack in most films. It is not to say that he isn't an interesting character, but he is not a favorite. I'll probably catch hell for not being in love with him, but que sera sera.

This movie was made soon after The Deer Hunter, and it is a serious Christopher Walken we see. His acting ability is in full review, and it is a pleasure to watch.

Not and action film, it is a bit more complicated with only a very big bang at the end. Walken is supported by some surprising actors in minor roles like Jim Broadbent, Victoria Tennant, and Ed O'Neill. he Dogs of War doesn't begin to deal with the moral complexity it promises: it keeps settling for easy, melodramatic solutions. Irvin is obviously a gifted storyteller, but he's shackled with the wrong story: it's a shame he couldn't have scrapped more of Forsyth's original plot and made a real movie about mercenaries and the Third World. Derek's sand coloured beret with a winged dagger badge denotes him as a member of the British Special Air Service (SAS). He is thought to be loosely based on John Peters, a former SAS soldier who served as a mercenary with 'Mad' Mike Hoare during his campaign in the Congo in the 1960s. Michel is a member of the French Foreign Legion parachute regiment, he is thought to be loosely based on famous French mercenary Bob Denard. It is unclear what Shannon and Drew's parent units were or if they were inspired by real life figures.

-In the opening scene in South America the team use CAR-15s, the carbine version of the US Army's M16 assault rifle. In Africa the mercenary force use Israeli Uzi 9mm submachineguns although a few of their troops also employ MAC-10 Ingrams. The also make good use of 66mm LAW (Light Anti-tank Weapon) rockets and Claymore mines whilst Derek seizes an M60 machinegun from the goverment troops and turns it against them. The iconic multi-shot grenade launcher they use is the XM-18

-Famous British mercenary 'Mad' Mike Hoare's attempted coup in the Seychelles strongly resembles the events in the 'Dogs of War'. Bob Denard's attempted coup in Benin is also similar. More remarkable is that it appears to have inspired an attempted coup by former Scots Guards and SAS soldier Simon Mann who led a force of South African mercenaries to overthrow of the dictatorship of oil rich Equatorial Guinea.

-In the book none of the mercenaries are American, Shannon is British, an Irish Unionist and ex-Royal Marine Commando who saw action in the Cyprus campaign. Rather than four mercenaries there are six including a South African and a German. Shannon is not captured and tortured during his initial reconaissance mission and instead of the subplot with the journalist the team find themselves in deadly conflict with a rival French mercenary. The weapons they use are very different and the process of obtaining them far longer and more convoluted. Shannon does not have a reconciliation with his ex-fiancee but instead has an affair with his employers' fashion model daughter. The character of Colonel Bobi is a far less impressive figure and in the end Shannon replaces him with an idealistic former African rebel leader for whom he has previously worked rather than the doctor. At the end of the book Shannon commits suicide as it is revealed that he has been suffering terminal lung cancer throughout the story. Kumander Bawang movie in hindi dubbed download
