As the British and French soldiers battle for control of the North American colonies in the 18th century, the settlers and native Americans are forced to take sides. Cora and her sister Alice unwittingly walk into trouble but are saved by Hawkeye, an orphaned settler adopted by the last of the Mohicans.
The last members of a dying Native American tribe, the Mohicans -- Uncas, his father Chingachgook, and his adopted half-white brother Hawkeye -- live in peace alongside British colonists. But when the daughters of a British colonel are kidnapped by a traitorous scout, Hawkeye and Uncas must rescue them in the crossfire of a gruesome military conflict of which they wanted no part: the French and Indian War.
Loved this movie, Day-Lewis and Stowe are so good when acting off one another in close up like after the Cameron massacre. Day-Lewis as gives us such a tight performance. His playing against been an English type is as per usual. He does not seem able to take up the battle for the land of his father in any work. What happened to him walking and talking to the Celts of Western Europe has a profound effect on his craft, as one born in London at about the same time but brought back "Home" so often I never can recall ever feeling anything but not English. It's the strangest belonging. An Englishman can be British, an Irishman can be nothing else. This forms such moments in "The Mohicans" when there are stretches of silence between Stowe and Day-Lewis. Mann's making (rather than) directing is not like any other movie I know of his. He trusts the cast to play their parts with such honesty and the gorgeous New York Hudson Valley background, the colours, sounds, the Bobcat looking at Stowe are a delight, are a full star in their own right. This movie is not like anything that is made now, maybe it too is the last hurrah of a by gone age just like the Mohican. Watch, watch it slowly, catch as much as you can and come back to it again some night you are on your own. I think it may become one of your all time favorite movies. Enjoy

When this historical adventure kicks in, it's thrilling in the way old-fashioned epics used to be, but its romanticism has a fierce, violent physicality that gives it a distinctively modern stamp.
This basic type of weapon was carried by many native American tribes dating back over a thousand years. Hawkeye uses a Pennsylvania Flintlock Rifle. Magua, having been spurned by the Huron sachem, resentfully leaves the Huron village with Alice, while Poe and Cora rejoin Chingachgook and Uncas. Poe shoots Duncan (Steven Waddington) to ease his suffering at being burned alive. Uncas runs ahead to catch up with Magua and rescue Alice. He manages to kill a few of Magua's warriors, but Magua winds up slashing his abdomen, stabbing him in the side, slitting his neck, and pushing him off a cliff before Chingachgook and Poe can catch up. Seeing Uncas killed, Alice inches close to the edge of the cliff. Magua reaches his hand out to her, but she allows herself to wordlessly topple over and join Uncas. When Poe catches up, he shoots several more warriors with his long rifles while Chingachgook engages Magua in hand/hand combat to avenge his son's death, eventually slicing Magua's abdomen open. In the final scene, Chingachgook, Poe, and Cora stand together at the edge of a cliff in silent ritual for Uncas' passing. Chingachgook then says a prayer to the Great Spirit, asking him to welcome Uncas into the Great Warrior's Council Fire and to ask all of his people who have gone before to await his coming, he who is the last of the Mohicans. Poe holds Cora in his arms as he and Chingachgook look sadly across the pristine hills and valleys. Yes, it is. The Blu-ray disc includes a version called Director's Definitive Cut (DDC), which is very confusing due to the fact, that Michal Mann created a Director's Cut (DC) years ago. After all these years, Mann sat down in the editing room once more and did the third cut of his film. This DDC is clearly more rooted in the theatrical cut and can be described as a mixture between the theatrical cut and the old DC. Here are many differences that do also exist between the theatrical cut and the old Directors Cut. The DDC mostly restores changes back to the way they were in the theatrical cut or keeps the extensions Mann made for the normal DC. This leads up to a runtime which is only approximately 2 minutes shorter than the old DC. The DDC-exclusive changes aren't of much importance and do not have a major impact on the film since they mostly include inserted shots or other minor bits and pieces.
