At the beginning of the 20th century an American woman is abducted in Morocco by Berbers. The attempts to free her range from diplomatic pressure to military intervention.
In early 20th century Morocco, a Sharif kidnaps an American woman and her children, forcing President Theodore Roosevelt to send in forces to conduct a rescue mission.
Ridiculous and over the top, this a ludicrous, though representative, addition to the 1970s Movie Brat cycle - the flirtation with extreme right-wing politics, the remoulding of classic cinema (here the imperialist adventures of the 1930s; John Ford; Peckinpah; David Lean etc.), the great skill squandered on an outmoded genre. Milius' tone is difficult to judge throughout - amid the triumphalist militarism, there is some superb, unexpected, farcical satire. The acting is generally atrocious, the pace uncertain, the battle-scenes ineptly handled; the racial politics are dubious at best. But every scene with Brian Keith as Teddy Roosevelt, and Frederic Forrest as an over-enthusiastic army officer - is a comic masterpiece.
Overlooked at the time, this movie definitely deserved better from critics and public alike. It's always seemed to me that "The Wind and the Lion" was simply released at the wrong time. Action/adventure pictures (and rousing flag-wavers) were sadly out of date in the post-Vietnam era when "The Wind and the Lion" was made. But as times have changed, this movie seems to have improved with age!

Sean Connery and Candace Bergen are very good as the leads, but it's third-billed Brian Keith that completely steals the show as President Teddy Roosevelt! Keith's scenes in America are interspersed with Connery and Bergen's adventures in Morocco, and they serve as great vignettes that show the absolute dynamism of Roosevelt. Brian Keith not only looks very much like Theodore Roosevelt, but his performance is full of the vitality one would expect of anyone portraying Teddy! A real "tour-de-force" for the underrated Keith.

Another high-point of the picture is when a battalion of U.S. Marines lands in Tangiers and seizes the government by force. Look for "Dallas" TV show regular Steve Kanaly (J.R.'s half-brother Ray Krebs) as the commander of the Marine detachment. Sure it's "jingoistic", but it's spectacular! I distinctly remember when "The Wind and the Lion" was shown on network TV in 1980, during the Iranian hostage crisis. The advertising trailer the network played said "Back when America had guts!"

P.S. For history buffs, it's interesting to note that the events portrayed in "The Wind and the Lion" actually do have their roots in fact (although much rewritten in the time-honored Hollywood tradition). In 1904 a gentleman named Ian Pedicares WAS kidnapped in Tangiers by a local sheik and held for ransom. This prompted an outcry in America, and Teddy Roosevelt did dispatch warships and Marines to effect his rescue. Pedicares and the sheik became friends, and he was eventually released unharmed. Only later was it learned that Pedicares was actually a British subject, and not an American citizen! Naturally, this embarrassing fact was quietly swept under the rug.
