About This Game

"You are the player, and must chase the Boogie Man.
If you catch him, you win! And that's the happy ending.
If you don't catch him, you lose, and what awful bad ending may await you then?"

The narrative takes a while to arrest the player because it exposes their characters and ties them to the plot very slowly and gradually. During the early minutes, we're just spectators. As in The Gray Garden and Wadanohara, here we also have a lot of dialogues for the presentation of the story and involvement with the plot, but the main difference is the option to skip some cutscenes with the shift.
The gameplay is the same as you're used to: exploring the scenario and solving puzzles - very complicated, by the way. The mapping is a bit confusing for all floors, corridors and castle doors interlocking in a somewhat illogical way, making it almost impossible for the player to create a "mind map" of where they are and where they should go, go round and round to get into rooms that seem to have been put away from all the shortcuts to test the player's patience.
Soundproofing is effective by having ambient sounds to keep the atmosphere of suspense and songs tightly tucked in at energetic moments in order to cause more pressure and anxiety in who is playing. The graphics are normal, they are even "charming", but the big surprise is in the art created to illustrate certain moments during the gameplay, superior if compared to previous ones of the author.. Absolutely loved the game, just like I loved all the other games in the series. While the voice acting is a bit different for the series I thought it was a good addition and I cannot reccomend this game enough!. After The Sand Man I was not sure what to expect about this game. The shift in mood and atmosphere from The Crooked Man to The Sand Man caught me off guard, and even though I am more of a fan of the horror genre, The Sand Man was a very pleasant and surreal surprise, so I was ready for anything The Boogie Man would throw at me.

And we went back to Horror! First impression was, honestly, not amazing. The voice acting isn't absolutely terrible per se (but honestly would not call most of it good), what was most annoying about it was the recording quality. It gave the game a cheap feel to be honest, as if I was hearing the characters speak to me through Skype.

Voice acting aside, this game has the strongest characters of the three (well, and also the most characters), including characters from the past two games. The way this game connects to the previous two games really caught me by surprise, I was very happy about how that was handled, definitely my favorite thing about this entry. The story was also very well realized, as it's been the usual in this series, but I felt like the puzzles this time around were a bit too obscure / random. I found myself having to check vgpersons' walkthrough once or twice, and the way forward was always something that honestly would not have occurred to me. Maybe if I went around hitting X (used a PS4 controller before anyone asks) on everything. Either way, that bit was a little annoying since this did not happen at all during the previous games.

Overall, this is a really good entry. In terms of its placement in the series, I still hold The Crooked Man as my favorite, maybe because it was the first one, and The Sand Man has a special place in my heart because of a sudden change and great mind**** it caused me for not knowing what to expect but another horror entry. I would say this is tied with The Sand Man in my book.

Check it out if it sounds good to you! Don't let the voice acting fool you in the beginning, just push through it and enjoy the game! Now onto the 4th entry.... I've always been a fan of Uris game- and I first started playing the series when there was only one game available- but I can definitely say, this has to be my favourite. I enjoy the twists and turns in this one especially and the character development. Personally, I don't mind the voice acting.

I've recommended the game to my SO and my friends. I can say I've played through it (and the series) several times now and haven't grown tired of it yet.. The Boogie Man is the third game in the "Strange Man" series. Compared to Sand man and Crooked man however, this one has full fledge voice acting, giving the characters more emotion.
You play as Keith Barring, A detective that's been given a full month to get a vacation with his wife, Helena. As a start, you go to this old castle that's about to become a tourist attraction. Once you learn about the castle's dark history, the game truly begins. Can you survive what the stone cold creature has in plan for you?
Overall Rating: 8.2/10. One of the strongest games in the series, but loses some points due to how demanding the best ending is.. So first off, at the time of writing this I have played Crooked Man, Sandman and am about 2 hours in to Hanged Man, after beating this game.
(I've only wrote a review for Crooked man so far though)

Anyway, so first off I want to say I did enjoy the game. I'd be lying if I said I hated it or something. However, currently I'm rating it my least favorite of the "man" seires.
Why?
Simply because I feel it lacks the charm the others have. I feel the first two had certain elements that this one just didn't have. The Boogie Man felt way too realistic, now I bet you're saying "Why is that bad?"
Well, mainly because the first two games (and already with the 4th) had a more mystic feel to them.

Both the Crooked man and Sandman were interesting charcters and I felt a clear motive behind their behavior. I just... didn't feel that with this.
Maybe I missed something, and maybe one of the other endings says more about the Boogie man himself. But he really didn't feel like a Boogie man. He felt like just a guy, a guy who liked making people miserable and wanted to cause problems.
And beyond him saying he remembered Sofie, he didn't really have many supernatural elements going on.
And maybe that was the intention, to make this game feel more real. But with such a neat concept like the Boogie man, I don't know I was just expecting more eerieness.
Both Crooked man and Sandman felt a lot more intimidating as well, and heck Sandman wasn't even really an evil guy.

Now, despite me wanting more to be done with the Boogie man himself, I really enjoyed the characters. Keith and Helena were both pretty miserable, which obviously I can't complain about because that was kind of the point. But I really enoyed seeing Sophie and David from the previous games.

Honestly thats basically my favorite part of this, is seeing more of the connections between all the games. The game itself is built just fine compared to the other entries in the seires, although I felt it was easier to get lost in this one compared to the others.
Oh I guess I should comment on the voice acting, but I'll be honest when I say it isn't a factor in me having issues with the game. I think it's ambitious, considering it's super rare for games made in RPG maker to have voice acting (I think this series is the first to do it) In fact it's rare for indie games to have voice acting at all since it IS a lot of work. Obviously some of the voices took getting used too. I personally think the worst was Helena, she was too quiet and sounded like she was trying to record for a cute ASMR video...
But beyond that, it didn't really bother me. And I'm enjoying the voice acting even more in Hanged man, so bold move!

So yeah, that's about it. I'd recommend playing this if you're wanting to complete the series or maybe if you're like me and try any good RPG maker game you find interesting.
Overall, certainly not a bad experience I just had my expectations a bit high I believe, especially after how much I loved the sort of, twisted whimsy of the Sandman.. Without Voice Acting: 9/10, would recommend.
With Voice Acting: 3/10, skip.

This is a confusing game to recommend.
It's quite possibly the best game so far, with better writing, graphics, plot, and setting (though the puzzles are a bit lacking compared to Crooked and Sand Man).
But the voice acting is HORRENDOUS. So bad, in fact, that I uninstalled the game and downloaded a freeware version of it without VA and played THAT instead. If a patch were to be released which allows the player to disable the voice acting, then I would recommend it whole-heartedly. Unfortunately, until such a day, I honestly think you're better off looking up a freeware version of this game, even if it's a bit less polished.

That said, if you ARE interested in playing, I think you should still buy the game, because it's only a few dollars and Uri (the writer) honestly deserves it. I suggest doing what I did and buying the game to have in your library, then playing a freeware version.
