Xena and Gabrielle face their anger and deceptions in an odd in-between world, guided by Solan, Xena's son.
I loved this episode it was a good way to convey the emotions and feelings by Gabrielle and Xena towards each other about the death of their respective without the story being too dark or dragging on for several episodes why they tried to work it out. Xena and Gabrielle are thrust into Illusia where Xena seemingly kills Gabrielle but it turned out to be an illusion(the name Illusia get it?) they are then both taken to the place where it all started, with Dayhok and Gabrielle becoming impregnated because Xena wanted revenge on Caesar. The both realise that neither of them was to blame it was just something that was meant to be. A truly first class episode and the music and lyrics were planned perfectly to match mood and situation.
The musical episode of Xena falls short of what it could have been. The rift growing between the two friends is shrugged off with bland music. Renee O'Connor doesn't even provide her own vocals, which is painfully obvious, and Lucy's are strangely subdued which could lead the untrained ear to believe they are not hers. This has the effect of distancing the viewer, and the fact that the lyrics are so overblown lessens the emotional impact even more. The only lead who actually sings well, and in character, is Kevin Smith's Ares, who has an equally seductive low tone. He makes this episode worth watching, but even he can't save this silly costumed, dismally effected, and tritely ended mess. The final shot of Xena and Gabrielle laughing in the water is too far removed from the opening, with Xena ready to throw Gabrielle to her death. It was just forty minutes before.
