A French journalist in Afghanistan is kidnapped by the Taliban.
In Afghanistan, French journalist Elsa and her colleague Amen are covering the story of Maina, a woman sold to a man when she was a child. Taliban leader Ahmed Zaief abducts Elsa and Amen and tries to force them to read a message to Western governments. The French president sends six Special Force to rescue Elsa who's hidden in a fortress in Pakistan. The team composed of Commander Kovax, Tic-Tac, Lucas, the sniper Elias, Victor and Marius release Elsa and Amen from their imprisonment but lose their radios. Now the group needs to cross the inhospitable land to save their lives with the Taliban chasing them.
Instead of six shooters, they have machine guns, still capable of downing several opponents with a single shot. Instead of Injuns, we've got the nasty Taliban. Despite first rate acting (very realistic grunts and groans), the plot is entirely predictable. There are many holes in the game plan. The best part is after 10 days of slogging over rocks, through snow and beyond, her fingernails are still perfect! How is it that a small group of tightly clustered guys can kill dozens of people shooting at them and not get hit? The photography is excellent and the shots realistic. Can't say I know what it is like to have a bullet zip by me or to see someone shot, but it looks "real". Final analysis, it is entertaining.
With the success of some big budget military films over the last couple of years it is a surprise that there are not more churning out these days. Needless to say there are a few that come along from time to time and when they stick to a decent formula they can deliver a great movie. The latest taking on the genre is Special Forces starring Diane Kruger and Dijmon Hounsou but does it have the punch and story to make it work?

Special Forces follows a French journalist covering a story about a woman sold to a man when she was a child in Afghanistan. When she is abducted by a Taliban leader the French president sends in a Special Forces team but when things go bad their communications are cut off and they must trek across inhospitable land and try to get to freedom. As military films go, this film delivers no shortage of action, but that is about where it ends. The story is fine, but there seems to be a lot of unnecessary side stuff going on here in an attempt to give more depth to the characters, but actually clutters it up a bit and takes away from the real story of their survival. That being sad it's nothing that really ruins the movie, but does tend to slow it down at times. The starts out with a bang really setting the tone of what you are hoping to get, but then slows to a crawl for quite a while before finally getting back to the action. The cast does fine, but no one really stands out, but this could possibly have to do with it being dubbed as well so you lose a bit of their actual performance. When they finally start to deliver the action there is plenty and it is pretty well done. While not completely accurate, they clearly made every attempt to get it as close as they could and it's the one thing that makes this work better than it probably would have.

This is far from a great military action film, but still manages to deliver some entertaining and great action moments that should keep those into the genre happy. Dijmon Hounsou is great as always and is another reason to give this movie a shot. For a while Degan's serious charisma also kind of makes Islamic extremist fundamentalism look cool and badass, which could have been hilariously subversive if director Stéphane Rybojad had pushed it further.
The FA-MAS is not used as it's flexibility is not met by the Special Operations requirements. The French army is at the moment ( been so for a few years actually) undergoing try outs for a new service rifle and the ideal platform to test anything rigorously is the SF branch. In the movie you see a wide array of weapons with many permutations. All fitting NATO's standards, that's where a main problem with the FAMAS showed and hence the lack of presence... The FAMAS uses a 25 rounds non-standard NATO magazine, which means it cannot be fitted on an other weapon used by NATO forces. The FAMAS G2 on the other hand ( the Navy version) fixed that but was never adopted by the Army. What you get is a display of M4-727, MP5's, HK 416 (current contender), G36K(current contender), Beretta ARX-160(current contender), FR-2, FPK and so on. It's a very up to date line-up and realistic one.
