Five substance-abusing friends decide to fake a kidnapping in order to bribe a police constable for covering-up a hit-and-run accident.
After the passing of her mother, and the entry of a step-mother, Amrita Jayshankar retreats into herself. Her father is summoned to her school and is told that his daughter may require counseling, but he refuses to believe and instead makes a donation to the school. Then Amrita meets with three males and a female, namely Zuben, Dushant Sahu, Karan Chaudhary; and Tanya Sharma respectively. Together they live it up with drugs and alcohol until things get out of control when they accidentally kill a couple. A corrupt police constable demands Rs.25 Lakhs to eliminate their involvement. Unable to come up with so much cash, the five decide to fake a kidnapping, demand the cash from Amrita's father, and clear their respective names. Amrita accordingly goes 'missing', and her father involves the police, who assign this case to once-suspended police inspector, Arvind Mathur. With the media getting involved, Arvind begins his investigation, but will soon find it hampered - complicating not only his assignment - but also his personal life.
In 2003, when Anurag Kashyap made Paanch, the movie was scorned by the censor board and was never released. It seems he still feels thwarted and decided to make a few changes to the plot and minify the abuse and obscenities and resurface it.

It was clear, how much Shaitan is inspired by Paanch (with the basic plot espoused from Abbas-Mustan's Khiladi). The only difference is that Shaitan is more stylized, and the first 30 minutes present the audience with youthful 'aiyyaashi' with all the boozing, smoking embraced. Then the youngsters make a 'mistake' (reminiscent of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) and then begins a series of subplots, which seem more or less inspired by its thriller predecessors.

Similar to Paanch, all the characters have prominent dark-sides and they even plan a kidnap-our-friend type plan. At least Paanch seems realistic in the way it depicts the background of the characters, Shaitaan is just too conventionalized. Some of the action scenes were good, and I think the Rajeev Khandelwal subplot was much more interesting. Even the music is just ordinary (Paanch, I recall, had brilliant a music score by Vishal Bharadwaj). I must admit though, Shaitan did have its moments of grandeur, especially the scene with a tweaked version of 'Khoya Khoya Chand' running in the background.

So what is the crux of the movie then? It tries to convey the fact that everybody has a devil (shaitaan) within them, and it emerges without admonition. But don't we already know that? Haven't we seen enough movies that express this message? I didn't find anything new in offing (although I'd have to agree its style is unlike Bollywood) and Kashyap's attempt of urbanizing/glamourising Paanch is not impressive. Worth a one-time watch, but not a masterpiece. Being a huge fan of Kashyap, I felt slightly let down when comparing it to Paanch, DevD, Gulaal et al. Just when i thought i was done expecting something different from Bollywood, came along this HELL of a movie, pure desi, made in India!! Right from the start, Shaitan is extremely engrossing. I did'nt move an inch throughout the span, and ended it with a feeling of utter satisfaction and gratefulness of not having wasted my time in another stupid movie Bollywood's so full of.

Shaitan has no huge starcast. But a small, and in this case, exceptional bunch of actors just gave unbelievable performances. Rajeev, Kalki and even the VJ turned actors, Neil and Nikhil have acted their parts great. But this isn't it. The story and the out-of-the-box movie-making is the heart and soul of Shaitan.

Co-Written by Bejoy Nambiar, the director himself, this story is greatly presented. It shows the makers have understood the plot and have captured it just the way they wanted. But what deserves a special mention is the camera juggling the makers have so beautifully performed. Its the kind of camera movement and shot perspective one might expect in a crazy Hollywood movie. Its sheer pleasure to have witnessed such uniqueness in the presentation.

Lot said, but its still incomplete without a special mention of, undoubtedly the highest point of the movie. The chase-cum-gunshot scene where the gang outruns a chase after having brutally beaten(probably killed) a man who tried raping Tanya(Kirti Kulhari). There's also a simultaneous gun fight involving Rajeev, Nikhil and Kenyans(!!) with an ultra catchy background score, the remix of classic Hindi song "Khoya Khoya Chand". The scene's breathtaking, to say the least.

All in all, this is a must watch for those who are'nt afraid of trying something different for a change. Go watch it, its far from disappointing...
