At the end of the Civil War, a colonel hunts down a man with whom he has a grudge.
Somewhere in the desolate and snow-capped 1860s-Ruby Mountains, a rugged and solitary man, Gideon, runs for his life, wounded by the unyielding Carver's murderous four-hired-guns posse. In this imposing but unforgiving landscape riddled with treacherous hazards, the two indefatigable enemies test the limits of their strength and endurance, with skilled Gideon always a step ahead of his relentless pursuers. But who is really Gideon? What has he done to deserve such hatred? In the end, what secrets are buried in Seraphim Falls?
Something happened at Seraphim Falls and that is the reason Carver (Neeson) has been chasing and trying his best to kill Gideon (Brosnan).

It is not often you watch a movie and do not know who the good guy or the bad guy is. This movie goes on for such a time without telling you that you are left to wonder: are Carver and Gideon both good guys? Well, one is constantly shooting bullets and one is dodging those bullets and this goes on for quite a while and still we don't know who the good guy is. So it keeps your interest.

Good performances by all, not just Neeson and Brosnan, who were perfect. I couldn't help thinking that Brosnan's role of Gideon could have been played by Dennis Quaid because he looked like Dennis Quaid for most of the movie. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it was the beard.

The cinematography was very good as were the stunts and no CGI here. The stunts looked real. The dialogue suffered in places but that was just so we in the audience were not to know what was really happening in the story until the end. So it keeps your interest. It's annoying, but it does keep one glued to the seat and questioning everything.

Two things I found wrong. One: Angelica Houston's snake oil sales woman with wagon in the desert and the Indian at the Spring were totally wrong. If hallucinations were meant, they were out of place. The dialogue here really suffered and it wasn't so that the audience was still to be kept in the dark. The movie could have been shortened without losing anything if those scenes were cut out. And, two: I have learned enough from Louis Lamour novels to know that if nothing grows next to a Spring in the desert, it is probably poisoned. Nothing was growing near that Spring where the Indian sat. Yet both Carver and Gideon drank from that spring and lived. Hmmmm.....

There is something else that bothered me. None of the characters seemed concerned that the horses weren't given anything to drink in the desert. They, of course, drank generously, from their canteens, but the horses were not considered. Nothing for the horses. A Louis Lamour character would never let the horse suffer like that.

Aside from my misgivings, I did think the movie was good and entertaining. Now, who was the good guy? I'll never tell.

Violence:Yes, Sex: No, Nudity: No, Language: only a couple SOBs and GDs At Nevada territory 1860, various riders form a posse led by Carver (Liam Neeson) and pursuing a fugitive named Gideon (Pierce Brosnan). They wound him but he escapes. The hunter leader is a tough, vengeful man and the hunted is a two-fisted and resourceful war veteran. They spend most of it running through the snow, desert, and woods, being pursued and chased.

The two leading men are magnificent in the hostile environment which the flick is set in. There are still nice scenes to see such as Brosnan leaping from a cliff and several sparkling duels. It also results to be surprisingly gory along with a handful of violent and breathtaking action scenes. It's a thunder stuff with a strong star cast. The actors supporting the lead roles are fine , mostly acting as rare persons or fools of one sort or another, as an Indian philosopher played by Wes Studi and a mysterious peddler by Angelica Huston. The large secondary cast is completed by Kevin J O'Connor, Michael Wincott, Ed Lauter , Tom Noonan, and Xander Berkeley as Railroad foreman, among them. Riveting cinematography by John Toll , reflecting wonderfully the landscapes in the ultimate unfriendly environment. Suspenseful and appropriate musical score by Harry Gregson-Williams. A must see for every enthusiast of a decent action western movie. If you are a fan of the guys, Brosnan and Neeson, you'll want to watch this one.

The motion picture is finely directed and well written by David Van Anckan . This is his first and only film, he's usually director of TV chapters as ¨Numbers, The Shield, Cold case, Daybreak, Heroes, CSI and Californication¨. Rating : Good, it's competent enough, a straightforward entertainment that results to be an intriguing story turned into an OK actioner Western. However , this is definitely an adult-oriented flick because of the violence, amount of gore and some profanity language on hand. It's one of the best Western films of the last years. A psychological drama with an intriguing ambiguity that challenges the viewer's loyalties and preconceived notions. For the first half of the movie you find yourself on the side of a hunted man. Then as the story unfolds, his pursuer becomes the one you root for.
