While exploring uncharted wilderness in 1823, legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back home while avoiding natives on their own hunt. Grief-stricken and fueled by vengeance, Glass treks through the wintry terrain to track down John Fitzgerald, the former confidant who betrayed and abandoned him.
Set in 1820s America, fur trapper and Frontiersman Hugh Glass struggles to survive the harsh winter after an oppressive Ree Indian attack and a mauling from a hostile maternal bear. Abandoned by his crew, Glass attempts to cross the bleak wasteland with only a single notion set in his mind; Revenge.
Visiting the Pacific Northwest has kinda been on my bucket list, and this film just saved me using miles on my American Airlines' AAdvantange card, but that's the good news... Sadly, this film borrows too much from the equations of Saving Private Ryan, extraordinary opening battle scene, but really, Gladiator with snow, where the wife and son flashbacks were way too similar and predictable. I barely heard the dialogue, whether it was poor recording of the audio during the shoot or the theater's sound system. (I resorted to reading the characters' lips.) Inasmuch as I wanted to believe the story, a bear attack of such magnitude, open wounds, loss of blood, albeit modern day medical care, and recovering with such ability, killed its credibility. Les Stroud and Bear Grylls would cringe regarding hypothermia's effects while swimming in subzero waters, wearing soaked garments, without succumbing, nearly had me walk out of the theater. Overall, the film should win an Oscar for cinematography, as well as a camera operator who handled a Steadicam quite well. If anything, the film makes me long for The Wolf of Wall Street II.
I have Watched many Hollywood films in my entire life, starting from Casablanca to the thrilling Revenant. The Revenant has the best cinematography the Hollywood has ever witnessed. The way Dicaprio lays forward his character is obsoletely marvelous....Love u man.I don't how a person can give performances like that.Forget the Oscars, you are the best actor of all time after De Niro.Mark my words, this movie is very thriller and not a waste of 2:46hrs. Movies like Shutter island,There will be blood, saving private Ryan,Gladiator and many more are the thrillers that I loved the most. But this movie..wow..way way awesome.Tom hardy ..ohh..you need to express more man
What pushes the film, at long last, into the icy river, is its very design, as a monument to slick, mercenary grandeur.
The Revenant is based, in part, on the 2002 novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge by Michale Punke. One of the biggest changes from the source novel is the addition of Hugh Glass' son in the film. Glass' son Hawk is not part of the novel but avery large part of the film. The weakened Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sees an image of his deceased wife. When the camera returns to his face, Glass slowly turns and looks into the camera lens. The screen goes dark, and his audible breaths continue to be heard as the credits begin. The ending moment recalls the films beginning, which opens with Glass's words, "As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You keep breathing." Glass now has no obvious reason to live, and he accepts his mortality, yet he will not invite his death. In this moment with that look into the lens, he has resolved to keep pushing so long as he has breath. Read a full explanation here. In the tale of real-world frontiersman Hugh Glass battling for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his crew, much of DiCaprio's screen time is spent alone, not talking, letting us know he is enduring endless pain of both the physical and emotional varieties. "It was a different type of challenge for me," DiCaprio told Grantland, because I've played a lot of very vocal characters. It's something that I really wanted to investigate — playing a character who says almost nothing. How do you relay an emotional journey and get in tune with this man's angst ... without words? Read more here. The title of the movie (as well as the source material) is a clue, in that perhaps he died and returned as a revenant, not of a ghoul, zombie or spectral sort, but as a supernaturally-healed man with unfinished business in this life and imbued with the spirit of revenge. (Note: the word "revenant" has evolved slightly since the early 19th century.) The movie is something of an exaggerated (and accelerated) adaptation of a possibly exaggerated account of true events. Nevertheless, it would stand to reason that the real Glass was a very resilient man, as he indeed horribly wounded by a bear and left for dead in a shallow grave, stripped of his tools, but there was no significant disadvantage implied by a winter season. (The risk of freezing to death only existed for the movie version of the characters/people.) Further insight along those lines is explored here. Whichever way the story is interpreted, Glass had the "spirit" to overcome the ailments and obstacles against him.
