A group of pirates lead by the the freakishly large Alvida, attacked and raided a ship. One of the crew members found a wine barrel on board the ship and decided to have a drink while the captain is busy. But inside the barrel is a young man named Monkey D. Luffy, who was taking a nap inside the barrel while playing as a stole away. The crew members were angry that there was no wine and attacked Luffy for tricking them. But Luffy defends himself from the swords which scares the pirates and they ran away. Except for a cabin boy named Koby, who's amazed by Luffy's special defense move on the pirates. Koby is a beleaguered and reluctant boy who's been a slave to Alvida for 2 years. He wishes for his own freedom again, but is too afraid to escape the clutches of Alvida. Luffy offers him a chance to escape, but they'll have to face the rest of the crew and Alvida in order to be free.
In Episode 1, we are immediately introduced to the basics of the story, to how the 'Great Pirate Era' has begun. The main goal of the episode is probably to acquaint the viewers with the personality and goals of the main character, Monkey D. Luffy.

The adventure begins in medias res, when "Iron Mace" Alvida and her crew are taking over a passenger ship. She is the first antagonist we encounter, and surely one of the most ugly ones.

While they are invading the ship, an orange-haired woman (later on: Nami) beetle over right onto the deck of Alvida's pirate ship and purloin their precious treasure.

In the meantime, we are introduced to our protagonist, who has been sleeping in a wooden barrel. The first people he meets are some pirates from Alvida's crew among them a "pirate" named Coby. Luffy easily beats up the attacking pirates and afterwards he eats everything he finds on board.

He gets to know Coby a bit better, and he realizes how chicken- hearted he is. Luffy shares his dream with Coby of becoming the King of the Pirates and finding the One Piece.

"I've set myself to become the King of Pirates And if I die trying Then at least I tried."

Coby's contrary character is perfectly used to highlight Luffy's outstanding personality and his tendentious, courageous mentality. On the other hand Coby is also being inspired by Luffy's bravery and his free-for-all lifestyle. He also shares his dream to joint the Marine with Luffy.

And I think this is the real power of Monkey D. Luffy. Being able to encourage people in order to reach their goals, and follow their dreams.

Despite this power, Luffy also owns a physical power. He is a rubber man. He has eaten a Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu one, which gave him this superpower. With this ability he finishes "the great" Alvida with one single "Gomu Gomu no Pistol" punch.

After he beats Alvida, the Marine shows up so he and Coby must flee with a rescue boat. Luffy is planning to find some members to his pirate crew, and he indeed has his first target "Pirate Hunter" Zoro.
