Following World War II, the life of the Jewish nation is uncertain. The United Nations is contemplating taking a vote on creating a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Until then, many Jews are exiled from much of Europe - especially Germany - and as they have no where to go, they are sent to detention camps among other places Cypress. Ari Ben Canaan, a Palestinian Jew, wants to smuggle as many Jews as possible into Palestine. In his mind, the easiest way to influence the United Nations vote is by sheer numbers residing in Palestine. Ari commandeers a ship with 600 Jews, and after some obstacles, manages to make it to Palestine. Ari grew up in a mixed Arab/Jewish community in Palestine. His best childhood friend, Taha, is Arab and is now leader of the Arab section of the community. Regardless of the United Nations vote, the road to Ari's dream of a peaceful Jewish homeland in Palestine will be a difficult one because despite his own model community, extremist factions, both on the Jewish side and the anti-Zionist side, will never see living together in peace and advocate violence to achieve their own ends. Within this fray is widowed American nurse, Kitty Fremont. Kitty is initially naive about the conflict and hostile toward Ari's means of achieving his goals. However, she ultimately falls in love with him and with his dream despite their religious and cultural differences.
The theme is the founding of the state of Israel. The action begins on a ship filled with Jewish immigrants bound for Israel who are being off loaded on Cyprus. An Intelligence officer succeeds in getting them back on board their ship only to have the harbor blocked by the British with whom they must negotiate. The second part of the film is about the situation in Israel as independence is declared and most of their neighbors attack them.
This is 1947. Not 1967 or 1987 or even 2007. When peace was still possible despite the evil forces moving already around. Therefore you must not see this movie with the mind full of the knowledge of what happened afterwards and is happening now. Just try to forget the further developments to be able to appreciate and value this movie as a movie and not as an accusation against or a defence of, anyone. More than 600 Jews most of them survivors of Nazi death camps arrive at the Palestinian land (in the movie the Jews living or born there are called Palestinians) despite former British opposition (Gt. Britain being the administering power there), to help in the building of a country that was promised them by the Balfour Declaration after WWI, a promise that was never fulfilled. So this is 1947. Then people were waiting for the UN to approve the creation of two independent States in Palestine, one Jewish and the other one Arab since both peoples are considered as having the right to that land. But those with good intentions from both sides soon are surpassed by ferocious extremists also on both sides like the Irgun militants on Jewish side for instance and Arab irregulars influenced or commanded by the neighbouring Arab States. In a certain scene we can even see a Nazi German commanding an Arab group who wants to attack a peaceful Jewish settlement that has lived in peace with its Arab Palestinian neighbours until then. The message lying beneath this movie is one of peace and fraternity. Nevertheless the last scenes show us the beginning of the atmosphere of violence, hatred and terror that has prevailed till now. This message, however, suffers from a certain naïvety and simplification of the conflicting interests. This is a movie clearly in favour of Jews but not exactly against Palestinian Arabs. It's well directed by the veteran Otto Preminger and more or less well performed by the players involved. Anyway I think unnecessary the role played by Eva Marie Saint whose character doesn't enrich the plot at all and who has a too hollywoodish performance for a movie of this kind. On the whole, however, and notwithstanding the above mentioned negative aspects this is a movie worth to be seen.

The foundation of Israel is quite a good story, both for its emotional and its historical value. They have done a fine job here presenting a relatively accurate version of events. Indeed, it is inherently political, and depending on how you view the Middle East, it may paint the way you watch this film. But viewing this in 2012 is not the same as viewing it in 1960, I think.

I would love to see another film along these lines, particularly focusing on Palestine in the 1930s. Even before the current Jewish-Arab problems, there was much turmoil among the British-occupied territory.
