In Japan in times of war among clans, the master samurai Gessai raises ten orphans in the mountains, one of them the girl Azumi, and they become experts in martial arts. When they are teenagers, the master assigns them to a mortal test, and then the five survivors travel with him with the mission of killing three evil warlords of clans and keeping their nation united without plunging again into a bloody war.
Azumi begins the film as the only girl among 10 warriors who have been trained from childhood by Jiji, a gray-bearded samurai. One day, Jiji tells them they must pass a final test before they embark on the mission they have prepared for all these years. He pairs them up, and, only five survive, including Azumi. Led by Jiji, this small band descends from the mountain that is the only world they know. Their mission, we learn, is to stop a nefarious plot to unseat the current shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, by the supporters of Hideyori, the son of deceased warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In other words, they are out to prevent a civil war of the kind that devastated their own families before Ieyasy wrested power from his rivals at the battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and imposed peace...
Another comment on this movie stated that its over-the-top, cartoonish feel is understandable because it's based on a manga. While I understand what the writer means, I note that he/she hasn't read this particular manga, and therefore doesn't realize how badly Koyama Yu is let down by this awful, awful movie. Let me say: I'm not a purist who believes that if a movie deviates from its source book, it is bad QED. But when a movie loses the soul of its source book, especially if it does it as badly as this one does, then it is, incontrovertibly, bad, bad, bad.

"Azumi" the manga is the best comic, and one of the best pieces of written work period, that it's ever been my pleasure to read. The characters, and the storyline, stand out for their depth, complexity and believability. It's hard to explain, but "Azumi" manages to seem real to me in a way that nothing has since I was a kid - I mean that you forget, while reading it, that Koyama has devised it. It feels as if, instead, he's channeling people and events who really exist. It is by far the best historical fiction I've ever read - Koyama is able to portray historical characters on their own terms, without distorting them by seeing them through modern eyes. They seem distant, alien and violent to the modern reader, but Koyama's insight into their psychology enables us to reach them. When I first read the comic I was stunned - I still am - at just how good it is.

Now, this movie. Every stupid cliché imaginable - it'd be bad enough in any action film, let alone in one based on such a great story. Every character reduced to a stupid, boring nothing - how did Kitamura, who said he was blown away by the manga, think he was doing justice to those characters? Idiotic violence for the sake of violence - Koyama doesn't need violence to sell his story; he uses it rarely and only when it's needed for the story. When he does use it, it's real and shocking - far more shocking, and extreme, than anything that was in the movie. The comic introduces its characters into the course of real historical events - the contest between the Tokugawa and the Toyotomi - and reading it will teach you a lot about Japanese history. You won't learn anything about history from the confused, uncaring mess that is the movie. I went in with reasonable expectations - obviously it wouldn't be as good as the manga. But I was literally (literally!) in shock at how far it missed the mark.

It seems to be quite popular outside Japan. How popular it is in Japan, I'm not sure. It must have done quite well, seeing that there's a sequel. But when I saw it in Japan the people around me were muttering in painful disbelief, waiting for it to end. We all filed out, silent and unsmiling. I'm happy for people who enjoyed this as a popcorn action picture, but don't forget - that's not the real Azumi. Azumi reminded me in bits and bobs of the 1950's samurai flicks of Akira Kurosawa, the Evil Dead films of Sam Raimi and the Chinese blockbuster Hero.

Like Hero, this is set in medieval times - Japan not China. Various Lords have to be killed to ensure stability for the kingdom and samurai are trained to do the job. The central role here is that of a female assassin Azumi - fast and strong - but like Hero, this is an ensemble piece. These similarities aside, the visuals of the fights are in no way comparable to Hero in grace and beauty.

The Evil Dead series could be quite over the top. So is Azumi. The blood flows by the bucket-load and in some way this film pays homage to the horror genre. We have the transvestite rose-sniffing villain Bijomaru Mogami who is genuinely demented, the assassins whose rape and plunder is almost zombie-like and the town inhabited by scavengers.

Akira Kurosawa made some great Samurai movies. Azumi was obviously influenced by Hidden Fortress and Kagemusha and to a lesser degree Yojimbo. Of course, this does not mean it has any of the visual splendor of Kurosawa, but as films go its not bad. I remember the last fight in Yojimbo. Till then, we knew Mifune was supposed to be tough, but he could have been bluffing all along. That fight really showed his skills apart from being beautiful to watch. I never got the feeling with Azumi or any of the other fighters that they genuinely had that mastery that the film tries to portray. The fight choreography was more balletic than anything else. Only the Ninja warrior looked somewhat interesting. Features more than enough thrilling wirework, slow and agonizing deaths, and blood-spattered faces to please even the most discriminating fans of the genre.
Like several other Asian movies, there are two versions floating around. First, there's an International cut for worldwide distribution and then, there's the original Asian, in this case, Japanese version that runs several minutes longer than the International version. Most of the differences result from trimmed plot sequences that were cut with the intention to make the International version a bit more dynamic.
