Australian outback expert protects his New York love from gangsters who've followed her down under.
Mick and Sue continue where they left off in "'Crocodile' Dundee". New York City drug lords are pursuing Sue for having solid evidence against them for murder, so for her safety, Mick takes her back to Australia. When the gangsters follow them, Mick demonstrates his outback skills once more.
"Crocodile Dundee II" (1988) Not As Good As First "Crocodile Dundee" Movie Due To Writing Problems In Part Two.

The first "Crocodile Dundee" (1986) movie was a wonderful comedy.

The second "Crocodile Dundee" (1988) movie was intended to cash in on the first movie, which it probably did....it probably made much more money for the owners of the movie than the first movie did.

Nobody expected the first movie to be a big hit. Everybody expected the second movie to be a hit, and movie owners could (probably did) cut great deals with movie house owners, television presentation people, and sellers of VHS and DVD home videos.

The second movie made the owners much richer than the first movie did.

But.........sadly, it wasn't (isn't) as good a movie as the first one.

Old story with comedies of fame...going back to "The Thin Man" (1934) which was a big, unexpected hit when it first came out, and resulted in many sequels, none as good as the first movie.

There are exceptions to the rule that follow-up movies are never as good as initial movies...."Godfather II" (1974) is an example.

An example closer to home is the original Johnny Weismuller "Tarzan" (1932) movie which was followed up by an even better "Tarzan" sequel titled "Tarzan And His Mate" (1934 which co-starred the lovely Maureen O'Sullivan (Mia Farrow's mother!) who swam totally nude with her handsome husband, Johnny Weismuller as "Tarzan" in a sort of underwater ballet quite breathtaking to see, and quite tasteful, nude though the dancers were in pre-code 1934 times.

"Crocodile Dundee" (1986) is sometimes compared to "Tarzan's New York Adventure" (1942) which uses the same jokes......yokel Tarzan from darkest Africa comes to NYC, dresses up in tuxedos, goes to night clubs, rides subways, and doesn't fit in....very funny! The owners of the "Crocodile Dundee" movie series would have done well to pattern the second "Crocodile Dundee II" (1988) movie after "Tarzan And His Mate" (1934) and could have made a much better movie if they followed the "Tarzan And His Mate" (1934) example (BTW, "Tarzan And His Mate" 1934 is honored by inclusion on the Library Of Congress National Film Registry List....best "best movies" list of all, to my thinking...and the first "Tarzan" Johnny Weismuller movie isn't!).

Linda Kozlowski, a lovely, Julliard NYC Drama School graduate of both high acting talent and skills (and also very pretty in her 20's in the 1980's) could have done much more than she did in the "Crocodile Dundee II" (1988) movie, where she and Paul Hogan are already "mated" and committed, and there is no more electricity based on courtship and "the chase" seen in the first movie.

Oh well........we are "too soon old and too late smart" and so is Hollywood (including the Australia part of Hollywood responsible for the Crocodile Dundee movies).

Here are reasons the first Crocodile Dundee (1986), aka "Part One," is better than the second one: Part One (1986) showed a "fish out of water" pretty girl reporter (Linda Kozlowski) in Australia, and then a "fish out of water" Australian comic male hero (Paul Hogan) trying to survive in the New York City of the mid-1980's.

Part One worked because it presented non-stop "fish out of water" jokes and situations all well acted by Hogan and Kozlowski.

Part One wasn't serious and didn't try to be.

Great photography of rural Australia and of up-scale New York City and suburbs.

Part One made fun of strange types in both settings, and the main actors did a good job as comics reacting to the strange types.

Good enough.

The Part One movie was a hit.

Part Two wasn't as good because it tried to get serious, got away from the main value of Part One, which was that both rural Australia and New York City of the 1980's are strange for people there for the first time reacting to all they see and must put up with.

Part Two was an imperfect action movie, not as good as Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Pierce Brosnan, Matt Damon, Bruce Willis, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, Jason Statham, etc. etc. movies, and not as funny as the first Crocodile Dundee (1986) movie.

Neither Paul Hogan nor his leading lady from Part One, Linda Kozlowski have the chance to "show their stuff" as they did often in Part One ("showing their stuff" was what made the first movie a big hit).

Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski are good actors, but the writing of Part Two just wasn't as good or "on the mark" as was the writing for Part One.

Sadly, this is a common story regarding sequels trying to cash in on big initial hit movies, but slowed down because sequels become committee projects always less likely have singular vision of the sort which makes initial hit movies good, but hard to duplicate when committees take over.

Whether this film is better than its predecessor is a matter of debate. Unlike other series where one film is clearly better than another, people seem to be split on this one. But only half of them are right: this film is better than the first one.

Why? Because there is more action, and there is a lot more humor. The suicide jumper, the gang, Leroy Brown, the addition of the aborigines... this movie sucks you in where the first one could not. Not to say the first was bad, but it had Mick far too preoccupied with romance when he should have been getting into more shenanigans. Here the romance is just assumed and plays no major part in the plot. Croc, as played by the sinewy and appealing Paul Hogan, may be a fish out of water, but he's a formidable comic hero, a kind of Outback James Bond only less perturbable. And this sequel is actually a better film than the original, which was one of the movies' least likely success stories in 1986. [25 May 1988, p.D1]
Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) is kidnapped by Luis Rico (Hechter Ubarry), the leader of a Colombian drug cartel. In his attempts to free her, Mick "Crocodile" Dundee (Paul Hogan) and Sue end up back in Walkabout Creek, Australia. Unfortunately, the gangsters discover their whereabouts and pursue them through the outback, forcing Walter Reilly (John Meillon) to serve as their guide. Crocodile Dundee II is a sequel to Crocodile Dundee (1986) (1986). However, the Dundee character is based on the true life experiences of Australian Rodney Ansell [1953-1999], who became stranded in the remote Northern Territory in 1977 and managed to survive alone (except for his two dogs) for two months before he was eventually rescued by a group of traveling bushmen. The screenplay for Crocodile Dundee II was written by Paul Hogan and his son Brett Hogan. Crocodile Dundee II was followed by Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (2001) (2001). No specific amount of time was mentioned, but it has been long enough for Mick and Sue to set up housekeeping in New York, Mick to become friendly with everyone in the neighbourhood and for Mick to become addicted to watching Days of Our Lives (1965), a daytime soap on the telly. A good guess would be anywhere from a few months to one year. In order to understand it, yes, certainly advisable. Crocodile Dundee explains much that would go over a viewer's head if Crocodile Dundee Ii is watched first, e.g., how Mick and Sue met, why Mick is called "Crocodile", Mick's relationship with Walt and with the aborigines, and how Mick came to New York. There are also numerous puns and references that are taken from the first movie and used in the second movie without explanation, so they won't provide the intended comedic value without having seen the first movie. About half, with the first half being set in New York and the last half in Australia. Yes. The Australian scenes were mostly shot in Australia's Northwest Territory. The island continent of Australia is a land mass roughly the size of the continental United States. Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Australia's ~22,000,000 inhabitants mostly live along the coast, particularly the southeastern coast that comprises the states of New South Wales and Victoria. The Northern Territory, as its name implies, comprises the vast northern territory in what could roughly be described as the "midwest" of Australia. Most of the Northern Territory, with the exception of the far northern tropical area, is made up of grasslands and a large portion of the Outback Desert. It is sparsely populated, with the majority of its inhabitants living along a highway that connects Darwin with Alice Springs. Sue's ex-husband Bob Tanner (Dennis Boutsikaris) sent her a letter and some photographs he took, while working for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Colombia, of Rico executing an unknown man. At first, Rico just wants the photographs back from Sue, but after Mick rescues her and they turn the photographs over to the police, it is pointed out that the photographs and Sue's testimony will be enough to put Rico away for keeps. Rico knows this, too, so he wants Sue (as well as Mick) dead. The smaller of the two Japanese men thought Mick was actor Clint Eastwood. They may also have thought Mick was being mugged and decided to intervene. The actual rat is not revealed. However, there would be airline ticket records, passport records, etc., of Mick and Sue's trip to Australia, not mention those double agents who may have been in the DEA office. Any number of those people handling those records could have provided information to Rico for 'double the price.' The tool Mick used is called a bullroarer, an ancient musical instrument used in ceremonial rituals. As the sound carries for a long distance, it can also be used (as Mick did) as a means of calling to others. The sound comes from the grooves in the wood reacting with the motion or the wind. Walt leads Rico and his brother Miguel (Juan Fernández) to Jaba Point, as directed by Mick. While crossing a river, Walt is pulled under by a crocodile that turns out to be Mick wearing a croc's skin. Walt joins Sue and the aborigines who are guarding the rest of Rico's party, having been captured and tied up by Mick, while he continues on to catch the Rico brothers. Concerned that Mick is taking this as a big game, Sue and Walt go looking for him. Meanwhile, Rico has decided to take matters into his own hands and sets the brush on fire. Through the smoke, Sue and Walt see Rico leading Mick at gunpoint. Walt shoots Rico, Miguel shoots Mick (who falls over a cliff), and Sue shoots Miguel. She runs to the cliff and sees Mick lying dead on the rocks below. As Sue and Walt gape in horror, Charlie (Ernie Dingo) walks up and says, "If Mick wants his clothes back, he can climb down and get them his bloody self." Suddenly, Mick walks up, wearing Rico's clothes. Charlie explains that they swapped clothes so Mick could flush out Miguel, a plan that was working until Walt shot Mick. Fortunately, it was Walt doing the shooting, so he didn't get a good hit. In the final scene, Mick asks Sue, after a lot of hugging and kissing, if she's ready to go home. "I am home," she replies.
