The case parts of this 53mm large U-42 (which refers to the founding year of the company by Italo Fontana’s (CEO) grandfather and certainly not to the size of the watch) have been made out of titanium with a black coating. The dial consists of an open-worked upper disc presented in black, with a bronze disc beneath, visible at various points. I love the way the wearer is seduced by the attire of the dial.The hour and minute hands are open-worked on their bronze coloured sections with a small area of black adjacent their fulcrum.At 3 o’clock, subsidiary seconds feature. This subdial is larger than the other two and embraces them with its oversized form. Whilst I often praise symmetry found on some watch dials, in this instance the play with different sizes and delivery, produces a pleasing haromnious outcome.

First thing I noticed when unwrapping this watch from the box it came in, is the weight and the size. The watch weighs approximately 185 grams which isn’t something you won’t notice when wearing. Of course, the most visible feature of this Chimera is the bronze case. The bronze case will eventually get this patina that will be unique to each timepiece. Limited to 300 pieces only, I am wondering what the difference will be between them in a few years (or decades) from now when these watches start to age. I am not sure, but I can imagine that the level of patina on a bronze case also depends on the geographical location of the owner (weather circumstances) and of course the type of abuse it will get.

We love the level of detail on these next-gen U-Boat watches, but we also think some parts are a bit over-done. Like mentioning three times that this watch is number 42 out of 300. We love numbered editions (and not - like we’ve seen on some IWCs - 50 watches with ‘One of 50’ engraved in the case) but 3x 42/300 doesn’t make sense. But perhaps the exaggerating does work for U-Boat aficionados in general.

The hedonistic appeal of my favourite drink came to mind as I admired the sculpted horological form of this latest timepiece from the Italian watch brand, U-Boat. The timepiece is delivered in bronze with a very masculine character. The colour scheme reminds me of my favourite drink.
