Black Dynamite is the greatest African-American action star of the 1970s. When his only brother is killed by The Man it's up to him to find justice.
Michael Jai White plays Black Dynamite, an action hero intent on cleaning up the ghetto, keeping smack out of the orphanages and taking it to the man, in the funniest film of the year. I saw the hilarious trailer months before I saw the film itself, and, quite frankly, I was afraid that, like so many comedies, the film itself wouldn't live up to the trailer, but it did. I loved it. I don't know how the studio blew it, but this film should have been the Austin Powers of the blaxplotation genre. It had practically zero theatrical release but people are finally catching it on DVD. I hope it garners enough attention to warrant a sequel because I would enjoy watching BD in a series of comic adventures.

Laughs aside, I think White and Company deserve a great deal of respect. Their love for the genre is palatable. Frankly, I had never seen White in anything before, aside from his supporting role in The Dark Knight, but I will keep an eye out for him. He obvious has the martial arts chops to be an action hero, but his comic timing was wonderful.

Check this film out. It is a great Blu-Ray. My only disappointment is that it does not include all of the material found on the various Black Dynamite webpages. A new smack epidemic has overtaken the ghetto, and only Black Dynamite is man enough to clean up the streets and uncover a deeper conspiracy that goes all the way up to the top!

Michale Jai White really hits the blackspoitation sweetspot for most of this movie. It's a perfect send up of 70s action with car chases and plenty of kung fu all backed by a good action movie soundtrack.

It gets a little out of hand near the end when Black Dynamite finally exposes The Man behind a secret plan to shrink black men's packages with a drug mixed into a shipment of malt liquor and winds up in a nunchuck fight in the White House with Tricky Dick Nixon himself. But don't let that stop you from getting down with the revolution and checking out Black Dynamite. Less deadpan spoof than loving act of possession, Black Dynamite near-fully channels the look and feel of its blaxploitation ancestors, warts and all.
