Two Chicago firefighter brothers, who don't get along, have to work together while a dangerous arsonist is on the loose.
Brian McCaffrey's father's a fireman and he was there, as a child, when his father died. When he grew he tried to be a fireman but quit and left town and for a few years tried other jobs. He would eventually return and try to be fireman again. However, he finds himself working under his brother Stephen whom he doesn't exactly have a good relationship with. When Brian gets his picture in the paper and is lauded as a hero when in fact it was a mistake, a politician offers him a job working under the department's arson investigator, Donald Rimgale. It seems that Ringale is working some unusual fires wherein someone is killed. Brian initially refuses but when he has too many confrontations with Stephen, he takes the job. And he gets a lesson on what it means to be a fireman.
There is more then enough cop, lawyer and doctor movies and shows but this movie and Rescue Me as a TV show are the best representations of what it's like to be a firefighter and what they do for a living. Going into burning buildings and bringing people out. Ron Howard really gets his actors in there with the fire it's not them in unrealistic fires where they're not even close to the flames, very well done by the effects team.

The story is about a pair of brothers whose dad was also a fireman. Kurt Russell plays the father and also the older brother Stephen who's a veteran firefighter and now a Lieutenant while William Baldwin plays the younger brother Brian who after bouncing around from job to job finally decided to get into the family business and is now a probationary at firefighter as part of Stephen's fire company. Slightly underrated Ron Howard film about firefighter brothers who face arson in Chicago. DeNiro is wasted in an awful role as the fire inspector.
Director Howard is so mesmerized by the flames, he squirts formulaic lighter fluid over everything. A conflagration of hyped-up movie cliches, courtesy of George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic special effects shop, scalds your face.
