Vijay Dinanath Chavan's father is implicated in a scandal and lynched by the villagers on the instigation of Kancha Cheena. Vijay, at a young age, takes on the responsibility of looking after his mother, and sister and in the process, he becomes a gangster. He captures Kancha Cheena and hands him over to the police...Kancha escapes sentence with lack of evidence and thus Vijay and Kancha are pitted against each other in the battle of evil vs good.
A young boy's quest for revenge leads him to become a gangster as an adult, and with each day he becomes more and more like his enemies. Can he find vengeance and redemption?
"Vijay Dinanath Chavan, poora naam..." It is one of the most oft-quoted dialogues of Amitabh Bachchan, and for the right reasons, too. He is slumped awkwardly on a chair in the police station, with kohl around his eyes, raspy baritone booming out those words which are bound to leave an impression in anyone's minds, while a shaft of light pours inside the office, leaving an aura of mystery...is this a Hollywood movie or what? Agneepath's physicality is absorbing, and quite too much for the mind to take in. The violence of the movie is quiet perturbing for the 90's attritional audience who had grown up on a healthy diet of melodrama and romance. All the while, this film is carried on the huge shoulders of the angry man, young no more, Amitabh Bachchan. His six feet frame towers above every illogical plothole, his character's growth is fascinating, and yet, his portrayal of a gangster makes you forget that you are watching a Gangster and not a flawed god. His tension, his anger, his angst, the scenes when his happiness or hope has been brutally crushed; they make the film worth watching-they even make Mithun Chakraborty's acting bearable. Crib all you want about this being an Indian version of 'Scarface', I will quote Clark Gable from 'Gone with the Wind',if you do. Nothing quite captures the intensity with which Amitabh Bachchan's eyes burn the audiences' souls. They are two burning charcoals which carry 25 years of vengeance and anger, and my god, how Amitabh pulls it off! Even the end doesn't bother you much, because he is acting. "Ashw, Shweth, Rakht se bana yeh lathpath, lathpath, lathpath! Agneepath! Agneepath! Agneepath!" are the words he quotes when he realizes with delirious joy that he has crossed the path of fire. He has done it! He is a pure soul now, a great man! His hands are clean, aren't they, he killed the man who was responsible for the way he himself became. HE was cleansed, purified, bathed in virtue's glory. If not for anything else, go and watch this movie to see an Amitabh Bachchan's magnum opus.
Angeepath Bollywood meets Scarface. The thought gone into mixing the background score and carefully written dialogues makes it one of the best movies ever. Arguably the roles play by the stellar case were they are at a point where they are each at the peak of their powers. Remake being made, seen trailers, leading actor in that movie says it pays homage to original movie. It shows that boys metamorphosis that takes place which sees the man conquer all, an fulfil his promise to take back the village that his family is throw out off. The irony is that its this creed that comes back to bite him back were he is face with having to cross the righteous path. A path his father warn was the path of fire. The central character in the film sees a evolution were he develops an ego which is driven by the sole objective of revenge, like many films of this era. What sets this movie apart is the Film production this is evident as the pedigree of this film is such that even watching it some twenty years on it still does not seem out of place. This is only possible through the carefully pick props which range from the clothes to the buildings, cars etc.As there is a climate of remakes and sequels with Don 2 Ghayal 2 Shootout at Lokhandwala. 2 How about Angeepath 2.
