Jack Cates is a cop who doesn't exactly play by the rules and is not a team player. He works alone. When he runs into two cops who are going to arrest someone for a misdemeanor, he joins them. When they knock on the door, they're shot at. Eventually Jack comes face to face with them and when one of them has his gun trained on the other cop, the other guy tells Jack to give up his gun which he does. He then shoots the cop and tries to shoot Jack but misses. Later part of the department thinks Jack was a coward for giving up his gun and the others think that Jack's wild ways got the cops who was with him killed. Jack learns that the guy who told him to give up his gun is an escaped convict and the other guy was the one who busted him out. Jack also learns he's been killing his former associates. Jack learns that another associate, Reggie Hammond is in prison. Jack goes to see Hammond; initially Hammond doesn't want to help until he learns of the man's escape but insists that Jack has to get him out to help with him. Jack does and Hammond takes Jack all over town hoping to find the guy but Jack suspects Hammond is holding back.
Convicted robber Albert Ganz escapes from a road gang with the help of his partner Billy Bear, and they immediately kill their partner Henry Wong, then they check into the Walden Hotel in San Francisco under false names. Alcoholic San Francisco cop Jack Cates and two of his fellow cops VanZant and Algren go to the Walden Hotel to check on a guy named G. P. Polson, who turns out to be Ganz. Ganz and Billy kill Algren and VanZant, then leave. Jack wants revenge, so he convinces his boss, Haden, to let him work alone on this case. Jack goes to a prison and visits Ganz and Billy's former partner Reggie Hammond, and Jack decides to spring Reggie for 48 hours so Reggie can help him find Ganz and Billy, but it's not going to be easy, especially since Jack and Reggie are not getting along with each other. The tension between them gets so high that they end up beating each other up in a garbage filled alley on their first night together, then it turns out that Reggie has $500,000 stashed away in the trunk of his car, and his car has been in a parking garage ever since he was convicted. Ganz and Billy are after the money, so they have kidnapped Rosalie, the girlfriend of their former partner Luther, in order to force Luther to get the car with the money in it. With this in mind, Jack and Reggie try to find Ganz and Billy before Jack has to return Reggie to the prison.
Totally forgotten that "48 Hrs" was Eddie Murphy's debut. The man's acting is so mature and natural, that I would have guessed he had been starring in blockbusters for years, before he made "48 Hrs". Eddie Murphy is really a force of nature: energetic, rude and incredible funny. Unfortunately many movies in his carreer were mediocre, he made 2 movies that really excelled: "Beverly Hills Cop" and "48 Hrs". If you like this movie you WILL love "Beverly Hills Cop" too. These 2 movies have a lot in common, because they are both funny buddy cop movies.

What's the story? Thief Eddie Murphy gets temporarily released from jail in order to track down a cop killer. The suspenseful and action packed pursuit of this cop killer is what "48 Hrs" is all about. The cop who accompanies Eddie Murphy on his search is played by Nick Nolte, a smoking, cussing, alcholic cop. Nick Nolte is the other force of nature in this picture. The chemistry between Nolte and Murphy is what makes this movie to die for. A lot of scenes were improvised and that is what makes this movie really special. It is street smart and credible. Serious and suspenseful, but still funny.

I can't help but keep comparing "Beverly Hills Cop" to this movie because there is another similarity: the long scenes. It could have been a Tarantino movie where the characters also get plenty of time to talk. Just to talk. It is refreshing to see an action movie that gives its characters the opportunity to interact with eachother. It makes the characters credible. And because both Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte were both at the peak of their carreers while making 48 Hours, it is a contineous joy to see those 2 talents perform excellently.

"48 Hrs" is really one of the best buddy cop movies I know. I love the photography with the long telelenses shots. I love the hilarious, but still credible chemistry between the actors. It is a classic that I havent seen being made for a while. Truly a movie I cherish... I remember watching this movie as a child & loving the cursing & action but after watching it again 25 years later, It isn't anything more than a Bad Cop Show.

Eddie Murphy is the only thing that kept me interested. Nick Nolte just grumbles throughout the movie, that is the character he is portraying but watching it now is cringe worthy.

The Villain has nothing going for him in this movie, He isn't Scary or in anyway Menacing.

Check Johnathan Banks aka Mike Ehrmantraut from "Breaking Bad" landing a Small Role at the Start & I also think I seen Terry Crews in The Busboy Band.

Overall It's an O.k Watch for Nostalgia but that's it.

I will Check out Another 48 Hrs just to see was there any improvement. Walter Hill, the director of such beautiful but stilted tough guy movies as ''The Warriors'' and ''The Long Riders,'' has attempted something very different in 48 Hours a male-buddy action film that's positively witty and warm-hearted compared with his other work.
No he is not. The character from this movie has the same name, and both characters are played by David Patrick Kelly, but he is not the character from "The Warriors".
