Superficial vein thrombosis treatment guidelines

As you will have read before in this website, the treatment of phlebitis (superficial venous thrombophlebitis) has changed completely since the guidelines of 2012 when it was found that phlebitis (superficial venous thrombophlebitis) is associated with the formation of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

Approach to treatment —Treatment of superficial phlebitis is primarily aimed at alleviating symptoms and preventing propagation of thrombus into the deep venous system. Epidemiology: Although large prospective trials are lacking, superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) has been reported occur at a rate of 4 in 1000 per year in the US (Blumenberg 1998, Coon 1973)As a comparison, the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is estimated to occur in 1 in 1000 per year. To the Editor: Decousus et al. (Sept. 23 issue) 1 report that fondaparinux was effective in the treatment of superficial-vein thrombosis, as compared with placebo. The authors state that An ultrasound of the vein needs to be performed to show where the clot is within the vein and to rule out other veins being involved. Ultrasounds are harmless and not painful.
