Distal (calf vein) DVT represents venous thrombosis that occurs in the distal deep veins of the lower extremity which include the paired anterior and posterior tibial veins and the peroneal veins as well as the muscular veins of the calf (gastrocnemius and soleus). superficial venous thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a vein close to the surface of the skin. they don't normally break loose and travel through the bloodstream, but they can be painful (superficial thrombophlebitis) or axial veins (ie, great or small saphenous veins) indicative of superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), and whether or not there are complications. Approach to treatment —Treatment of superficial phlebitis is primarily aimed at alleviating symptoms and preventing propagation of thrombus into the deep venous system. Epidemiology: Although large prospective trials are lacking, superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) has been reported occur at a rate of 4 in 1000 per year in the US (Blumenberg 1998, Coon 1973)As a comparison, the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is estimated to occur in 1 in 1000 per year. To the Editor: Decousus et al. (Sept. 23 issue) 1 report that fondaparinux was effective in the treatment of superficial-vein thrombosis, as compared with placebo. The authors state that An ultrasound of the vein needs to be performed to show where the clot is within the vein and to rule out other veins being involved. Ultrasounds are harmless and not painful. What is the treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis? The treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis depends on the cause and the type and severity of the symptoms present. UW Medicine VTE T
