About This Game

The gates of Heaven are closed shut; the realm of Hell consumed by flood.
And in their wake, countless parallel worlds wither away, one after the other.
The surviving angels and demons gather at the city they believe to be their final chance at salvation: the floating purgatory of "Tokyo Babel".

Joined by humans, they embark on a pilgrimage across the seven layers of Babel, hoping to ascend Jacob's Ladder in an effort to re-open the gates of Heaven.
Their journey would be an atonement toward the heavens.

And yet, their plans fall into ruin as a group of pilgrims - their minds consumed by madness - set out to lord over the numerous layers of Tokyo Babel with the intention to wreak complete and utter havoc atop the floating purgatory.

Amidst this neverending impasse, a lone youth is saved from the ruins of his devastated world - Tendou Setsuna, a man denied human treatment since birth.

Joining his savior, Lilith - known as the Witch of the Night, he begins his journey across Tokyo Babel...

...yearning for an answer to a single question:
Why he still possesses the will to keep on living. a09c17d780

Good Cinema Quality Visual Novel.. This game has two halves very badly sewn together.

On the one side you have absolutely dull and boring slice of life with one dimensional characters (and no fanservice to speak of),
On the other side you have chuuni/'badass' battles between angels/demons/gods.

Unfortunately since the characters fighting are the ones established in the boring SOL scenes you never care for what happens to 90% of them.
As such, this game is not worth your time. Just get something else with better characters (not hard to find since these are terrible) even if the fights might not be as 'epic'.. Finished the game:
- Heroines fights are short and mostly disappointing compared to most of the fights, but the last Samael fight is top notch for me.
- Chuuni fights all over the place and no single character that has 'simple' power. Raison d'etre stuffs really helps making the fight more grand and develops characters at the same time.
- Didn't expect the slice of life scenes to be not so out of place. Can't explain it really well but it really fits the main character groups pretty well.. some of you might not like it though.
- Character endings are satisfying all around instead of just focusing on true end. I didn't expect that considering my previous experience with Higashide is Ayakashibito.
- Some characters feels like they're under developed but at least each of them has their own ending, making them not forgotten to the readers.

it's pretty okay. So... Tokyo Babel is about a protagonist, led by a series of encounters, gains a sense of self and strength to keep on living for the future. It is based on a post-apocalyptic HELL/HEAVEN setting, and A LOT of lore is involved, so if you are interested in that area of study, then you would absolutely love reading how the story here plays out.

I struggled through many of the descriptive action scenes. It felt like the writers are needlessly stretching the scenes with needlessly descriptive details of the battles. I mean, I didn't really care how "this sword" was as strong as "this modern weapon", or how "this injury" was as great as "this". Other than that, I really enjoyed reading the actual story-telling of Tokyo Babel. Every character had their own conflicts, and their own conclusions. The last (locked) route in particular, gave every character's conflicts and conclusions the brightest shine. A lot of these scenes outside of the action scenes, were mesmerizing to read. Props to the translators, for such a professional translation. <3

Known length of Visual Novel: 30 ~ 50 hours. This visual novel is a bit tricky to classify. I mean, at first I thought it would be like Black Veil Brides's "We Don't Belong". Which begins with "The gates of heaven will lock shut, the pits of Hell were all filled up, and I feel, I don't belong here."

And then it got worse. The story is epic and worth every penny. But still it is VERY dark, and is not for kids. There are multiple paths, which lead to one of three love interests. Still, this game will give you nightmares.

Suggest getting it in the bundle, as both games are great.. This is a visual novel that has somewhat flown under the radar in most circles. It is an all-ages novel and it tries to be an epic-fantasy type of novel lasting in excess of 30 hours.

The premise is that all worlds, including all parallel universe type worlds have faced a mass-extinction event. At the same time, a ‘divine calamity’ occurs, flooding hell and closing the gates of heaven. As such, most demons and angels have been expelled into the dying worlds, with no way of returning home. Furthermore, this closure of heaven and hell also works on souls; so, if a demon or angel dies, instead of being resurrected in their respective ‘home’ of heaven or hell, they now die permanently.

Such a frightening concept causes angels and demons to unite to work together in trying to solve the reason why God has all of a sudden abandoned all three realms. Humans of course, play a part, for it they who must make a pilgrimage across the levels of Purgatory (now re-christened Tokyo Babel) to reach the gates of heaven and… well, hopefully find answers.
Trouble is, all who have set out thus far, don’t get very far. Most succumb to madness, ergo becoming enemies of the last city in Tokyo Babel called, Pandora.

The story follows a superhuman Tendou Sestuna, who is sponsored by a Demoness Lilith, the angel Raziel and another human Sorami, as the four attempt their own pilgrimage across Tokyo Babel. There are three core storylines, each following Sestuna’s relationships with the trio of ladies, there’s a recommended order to play through in order to understand things clearly (angel – human – demon) and thus this novel necessitates a walkthrough unfortunately.

I found this novel to be a frustrating experience because it tries too hard to be too many things at once. For example: It tries to be four different genres at once. It attempts to be a serious horror, super-heroic fantasy, romance and comedy all at once. It is very difficult for games and novels to blend two genres, never mind four at the same time.

As such, there can be serious mood whiplash, you set out to fight a powerful foe, only to do a short comedic detour to a strip club so the ladies can have a laugh at your expense by dressing up for you. It’s part unnecessary fan-service, and partly poorly thought out story planning.

The comedy parts are indeed funny though, don’t get me wrong, even the fanservice parts can be hilarious, but once they’re over it switches to a grim post-apocalypse sermon on religious, the reason for living and beings that can flay your mind and flesh within an instant. It is a severe mis-match of moods, and this continues because for some inexplicable reason each unique route has the protagonist building a romantic relationship with each of the girls, which could quite frankly be eliminated from the story completely, because all it serves to do is to continue to detract from the seriousness of heaven, hell and the world going whoops in a handbasket.

Indeed, the horror introduction (which you can read via a trial version on Mangagamer I believe) is pretty much the highlight of the game. It fails to reach those heights for the rest of the 29 hours and multiple stories that it tells.

Additionally, whilst the translation is good, it is at the same time somewhat ‘off’. It is difficult to put my finger on what exactly is the issue, but it feels like it needs to go through another edit. There are sometimes throw-away lines that don’t match up with the mood, or the previous dialogue, or completely unnecessary lines that just make you go ‘what?’ For example; A girl smelling like cotton candy, and that line pops up after a very serious discussion, it was completely out of left-field, it doesn’t ‘belong’ there.

Saying all that, the art is very good – though I often wanted more and I wanted more 18+ gruesome scenes to be seeing. Remember: This is a world where demons and angels can succumb to madness, so seeing their handiwork when it came to torturing sane people was actually quite nice (in a bizarre way), but the game has to remember it is rated for all-ages (officially it is 15+), so it tones things down massively. If this had gone full adult-only (or 18+) I genuinely think the artists would have had complete freedom to hammer home the visual aspects of the horror elements of the story and it would have been all the better for it.

Why tell me there's a field of blood with humans and angels impaled on stakes if all you're going to show is a bloody cotton field? Why say the skies are grey and then show... a blue sky? It's inconsistencies like this that let the whole experience down.

Did I enjoy Tokyo Babel? I suppose so, in a way, though it became more and more of a slog as it went along. Even though choices were sparse and the story tries too hard to be ‘epic’ that it drags on too much, I genuinely did find the ideas presented in the novel to be interesting. It just needed to nail down what genre it wanted to embrace and it needed to not cater to being All-Ages and I think it would have gone from beyond ‘decent’ to something in the realms of exceptional.

As it is, it is far too flawed for me to rate objectively any higher than a 6/10 and even so I can only give a 5 purely for serious visual novel fans. For anyone else, it’s a 4 for the muddled execution.. One thing to be warned about: this is not listed as a "horror" VN, and, it's not one, but the beginning--which lasts for quite a while--creeped me out way more than most horror movies ever have. Let's just say that I am glad that I started this VN during the daytime and when I wasn't at home alone. I think if I had started it at night and/or home alone, I'd have probably closed it pretty quickly and then had nightmares. Actually, no I wouldn't have, because the suspense is fantastic, but I would have *wished* that I had.

I've only played this one through to one ending so far, but I do recommend it. It's not perfect, but it is full of mystery and excitement and battles and such. Not a lot of choices to be made in this one, but for once I didn't really mind that. The story is interesting enough that I barely even thought about it.

The art is great--except there is one of Sorami's character poses that really annoys me because it shows up a lot and who stands like that?--but all in all, both characters and backgrounds are well done, and there are lots of both. It's not going to go on my list of favorite VNs of all time--it's no Steins;Gate, but for those who like VNs and also enjoy fantasy/sci-fi, I highly recommend it.. This was amazingly done, I got it originally due to Samael having Karen's voice actor from the Monogatari series, but looking back there was much more than just good voice acting. This visual novel had amazing sounds, and even little screen movements and cg changes when combat started. The novel also was easy to get into and interestingly enough it got away from an a-typical school life setup; In a Shaft like producer fashion there was an extreme lack of any civilian or random person interaction, almost like the mains and supporting characters were the only existence. I think that was a great choice, as they cut out on any minor minion fights to focus on pushing the story forward. To the opposite extreme, this worked to prevent from having too many important characters be beaten just to advance the story.

If I was to give a number to this game it would certainly be 11/10, of course my opinion might be skewed from falling into Koyomi's voice (Setsuna).
