Loser, a member of the Angels, has his bike stolen by a group of Mexicans. He calls in his fellow member Blues as well as several of the other members to help him get his bike back and beat up the guys who stole it. When they get to where Loser's bike is, a huge fight breaks out and several of the guys who stole the bike are beaten to a pulp. However, the police soon arrive and the gang splits. Loser, finding himself without a bike, steals the bike of one of the officers and is chased down and shot. Loser is then taken to the hospital, so he can recover before being prosecuted. The gang then comes and takes him out of the hospital, but in the process they break the bottle of blood that is keeping him alive and one of them attempts to rape a nurse that catches them in the act. But with all the trouble they go through, Loser still winds up dying.
Peter Fonda plays 'Heavenly Blues', the leader of the Angels, a motorcycle gang from San Pedro, California; Bruce Dern plays 'Loser', his best pal. When they both botch their attempt to retrieve Loser's stolen bike, Loser ends up in the hospital. When the Angels bust him out, he dies, and they bury him. Nancy Sinatra plays Mike, Blues' "old lady" and Diane Ladd plays Loser's wife (Dern's real-life wife at the time). The plot is basically a buildup to the last half-hour of the film in which Loser's funeral becomes another wild party.
If there is any biker film that is a complete waste of time, this is the one. This film had a promising beginning but that was it. I am a big fan of Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern, but I was very disappointed with this. I can't believe that this is the film that introduced the biker film chain of the 60's and 70's. Much better biker films have been made later like "Hell's Angels On Wheels", "The Rebel Rousers", and my all time favorite movie "Easy Rider". I rented this thinking that this was going to be great and I was surprised that I was able to sit through the whole thing. Nancy "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" Sinatra added nothing good to this movie. The rumble scene between the bikers and the villagers was just pathetic. I didn't want Peter Fonda and Bruce Dern to be remembered for this film but I'm afraid they are, especially Dern, whose role as "Loser" reminded me of "Weekend At Bernie's". I don't recommend this turkey to anyone, not even a hardcore member of a biker gang.
The Wild Angels came out just a few years before Easy Rider was released. As much as I admire Easy Rider, I must say, this is a more entertaining watch. Yes, I know people may think I'm crazy for saying that. I liked seeing Peter Fonda as a confused bad-ass in this film. He has a quality to him that made him work as the leader of the gang. Fonda plays a biker named "Heavenly Blues" who has second thoughts about his life-style after a plan of his gets his best friend fatally shot. Bruce Dern does a lot with his small role and even Nancy Sinatra is decent. I thought Diane Ladd was great too. What Corman does that other known B-movie moguls don't bother with, is to cast good actors and that makes a huge difference. I also find Corman to be a decent director and it shows here. This is a decent pre-Easy Rider film.
