THE MAN FROM UNCLE – The It's all Greek to Me Affair - 1967

This is the 80th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) UNCLE's main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

This waste of viewer's time is set in Greece. UNCLE types are in pursuit of an escaped criminal, George Keymas. Keymas has stolen a top secret UNCLE code and he intends to sell same to THRUSH.

The rest of the cast includes the normally reliable Harold J Stone, Linda Marsh and Peter Balakoff. Stone is playing an old Greek hill bandit. Marsh is his daughter and Balakoff is her new beau. The fly in the ointment here is Keymas. Keymas and Marsh are husband and wife. Marsh of course wants nothing to do anymore with the swine Keymas. Stone agrees to kill off Keymas to allow his daughter to marry her new love.

The gag here is that Stone has never met Keymas, and has no idea what he looks like. This of course leads to UNCLE types, Vaughn and McCallum being captured by Stone. Stone even puts the bag on UNCLE boss, Leo G Carroll when the man shows up to help.

This one proves the writers of the series were still able to lower the already low mark of season three. The other reviewer, (shade grenade) nails it with his comment about the horrible score. Gad, the music from Gilligan's Island sounds like Mozart compared to this racket. This is not one of the show's producer's finer moments. Illya is in Greece, at a rendezvous with fellow U.N.C.L.E. agent Miss Prendergast ( Kay Elliott ). No sooner has he handed over a briefcase containing the latest top secret codes, than she is attacked by a thief called Manolakas ( George Keymas ). Illya intervenes, only to be gassed by the thief who then escapes, intending to sell the codes to Emile Savignon ( Jacques Roux ) of THRUSH Central.

Illya gives chase, but Manolakas is ambushed by ageing outlaw Stavros Macropalous ( Harold J. Stone ). The thief escapes again, but Illya is not so lucky. Thinking the codes worthless, he throws them away. He then tries to bargain with Mr.Waverly for Illya's return...

Never mind the writers, actors and directors, I reckon one of the worst things about Season 3 was Gerald Fried's music. This normally talented composer came up with some truly monstrous sounds, including the kazoos on 'The Hot Number Affair' and the pseudo-Greek twanging heard here. What a good thing there was never an U.N.C.L.E. adventure set in Wales, ( apart from John Oram's novel 'The Stone Cold Dead In The Market Affair' ) otherwise we'd have had a harp playing relentlessly over the action.

Harold J. Stone is the poor man's 'Zorba', laughing incessantly and generally acting as if he has stepped out of a third-rate village play. The plot, such as it is, hinges on mistaken identities ( Illya mistaken for Manolakas, Solo for Sauvignon, and then Mr.Waverly for Sauvigon ) and grows incredibly tiresome after twenty minutes.

Two things I liked; the late Kay Eliott's cameo as 'Miss Prendergast'. When this mousy woman talked of impersonating an exotic dancer in her last assignment, my jaw fell. The actress also gave a memorable appearance as 'Stella', the nagging wife in the 'Star Trek' episode 'I, Mudd'. The coda in which Mr.Waverly chooses to retreat to a cave rather than meet up again with an old flame is also funny. But overall this is about as appealing as a bowl of mouldy Moussaka.
