Two cops are given the 'dirty' job of staking out the home of an escaped convict's ex-girlfriend. Chris and the beautiful girlfriend accidentally meet and fall in love. Just as Chris' confesses, the convict appears, but will she betray him?
After a brutal murderer escaped from prison, it is ordered that all of his possible contacts are put under survey. His former girlfriend Maria McGuire, who ceased contact with him long ago, is observed by four cops. The night-team is formed by Chris Leece and Bill Reimers, who work as partners normally, too. Maria proves to be a very cute young woman, and Chris, who bugs her appartment as Telephone-Bill, falls for her. Now, everytime he is with her, his partner has to watch his friend enjoy life and he himself has to get out before the other team comes in. But when Maria's ex arrives surprisingly, Telephone Bill and his partner find themselves in deep trouble.
I wasn't too impressed with this comedy / romantic / thriller . I think it's not only down to the fact I'm not all that keen on buddy movies but down to the fact that much of the fun is dissolved by the violence on screen . This a comedy right ? so did we have to see some explicit violence at the start of the movie featuring Stick escaping from jail ? I know you could make the same criticisms about 48 HOURS but the trailers to that movie did indicate it was a violent movie while the marketing for STAKEOUT seemed to suggest it was frothy lightweight fun with Chris dancing while Marie takes a shower

Oh and didn't anyone else think that Chris and Bill getting the binoculars out while Marie dresses , undresses and takes a shower was a bit pervy ? Come on we the audience are expected to view these cops as heroes . If Stick wasn't such a murdering violent piece of work I'd have had hoped he was going to teach those two voyuers a lesson in morality

Oh I know it's nothing to do with the film company but I couldn't help noticing the very , very poor film print that ITV broadcast tonight , it looked like a third generation pirate print thereby decreasing my enjoyment of the movie even more - Not that I would have enjoyed it much if it'd been a good film print There were some laughs and this was a good show, but I found the level of tension higher than the laugh level: and Aidan Quinn plain stole the show with his psycho act. However, the entire production has been done before. I've seen the improbable love affair, the guns, the car wrecks....
Between Lecce's illicit courtship and Reimers' consternation, there are some hearty laughs of a juvenile nature.
