We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun's men, Izo is captured and crucified. Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continuum to present-day Tokyo, where he finds himself one with the city's homeless. Here Izo transforms himself into a new, improved killing machine, his entire soul still enraged by his treatment in his past life. His response to the powers-that-be, whose predecessors put him to death, is the sword.
An executed samurai takes an existential journey throughout time, space and eternity in search of bloody vengeance.
The latest chapter in Takeshi Miike's continuing essay on humanity and brutality, IZO is a two-hour experimental mind-trip.

If this film were in any way concerned with making sense, the storyline might resemble something like this: A man is brutally murdered in ancient Japan, but, bearing his vengeance, he returns to the Earth and wanders uncontrollably through time and space, becoming the embodiment of mankind's self-destructive nature. Throughout his wanderings, he encounters all kinds of strange and metaphoric characters, and he proceeds to kill them all with his samurai sword.

This film is an elaborate thesis on mankind, but the exact nature of the message is a matter of debate, as is whether or not Takeshi Miike himself even has a clue. There will no doubt be differing opinions as to what the characters represent, but you better make up your mind during the first hour of film. After that, most of the scenes that obviously point out a social message - like black-and-white footage of war - disappear, and what the resolution is depends on your interpretation of the characters.

For those of you not familiar with the works of Takeshi Miike, suffice it to say that he is determined to mine the human subconscious in search of new and exciting ways to make people throw up sushi and tempura on the carpeted floors of Tokyo multiplexes. Among Japan's pantheon of ultra-violent directors, he is notable for being always ready to address the issue of his own sadism. Ever film he makes is like an expansion of Hitchcock's shower scene, forcibly accusing us of being sadists at the same time as he delivers great images of cinematic violence. More than the social commentary, which is confusing and likely uncertain, the most interesting philosophical study in IZO is Miike's self-examination of his own lust for violence, as well as the main character's and the audience's. Is Izo so brutal because he is inhuman, or because he is too human?

You may not get anything from straining at this befuddled movie, but it is still enjoyable and provoking, if not gut-wrenching, experimental cinema. Any violent philosophical essay that features long shots of a folk singer playing guitar and screaming ballads is worth a look. IZO has elements of Kafka, Lewis Carrol, Terry Gilliam, and Seijun Suzuki, but it is undeniably Takeshi Miike.

You can call Miike sadistic. You can call him demented or depraved. Just don't forget to call him an artist. Izo is crucified, but instead of being dead, he must go through portals in time killing every single thing in his way. With each kill he becomes more darker and stronger. Until his inner demon takes full control of his body.

Takashi Miike is known for making bizarre films and I have yet to see any of his other work, but Izo ranks up there with any Lynch, Cronenberg, Kaufman type film. I went into this film knowing absolutely nothing about it and left knowing absolutely nothing about it. I can take some wild guesses, the film could be about death and rebirth, or about the amount of violence in todays society. It is never clear, and some may argue that this was Miike's point and it's always been his way of storytelling. Remember, just because it's weird and from an acclaimed director, doesn't make the film good.

Whether Miike wanted to send a message through this film, or if he just wanted to have violence after violence after violence, his message gets lost amidst the blood shed. The film does have some moments that I was able to pick out and understand (Running along the infinity symbol and waking up near a river) other then that I was lost from start to finish.

While watching the film it felt like I was watching somebody else play a repetitive bad video game. All you need to know about it is that he kills one person after the other...after the other...after the other. There is really nothing else to this film. If there is, then I lost it because all I saw was blood up on the screen.

If you think that you will like this type of film....think again. I'm all for senseless violence, but this is taking it one step too far. Even for Izo's own personal hell of only killing people it goes a little to far. I was laughing more throughout the film then being horrified, or appreciative.

The film does excel at gore. It has some nice blood spurting scenes and some nice sword getting stuck half way through a man's face scenes. This would be the only highlight of the film, if you're a gore fan and only want to see blood shed and killing, without any story what-so-ever, then this may be a film for you. Izo doesn't care who he kills, it can be thugs, business men, women, or even children.

The film showcases some nice artistic shots and I am definitely interesting in seeing other Miike films, in hopes that maybe I can understand his work more. Izo has terrible acting, but the direction is quite good. I was surprised to see that Miike was able to keep the same tone of killing people throughout the entire 2 hour movie.

If you go into this film and understand whatever it was meant to showcase, then bravo, you have done more then I can say. If you go to see this film and love it for it's over-the-top gore and useless killing, bravo again. Although for now, this film can circle it's own infinity line and never come back into my DVD player.
